인민

‘인민의 행복이 나오는 인민주권의 전당’. 역사적인 남북 정상회담을 위해 평양 만수대 의사당을 찾은 노무현 대통령이 그곳 방명록에 기재한 내용이다. 인민이라는 용어가 눈길을 끈다. 자유민주주의를 골간으로 하는 대한민국의 대통령이 사용하기엔 뭔가 어색하다.

내가 한 영작
"May ⓐhappiness of people come from the sanctuary of ⓑpeople's sovereignty." President Roh thus wrote ⓒon the guest book ⓓupon his visit of Pyongyang's. The term people, in-min in Korean, instantly stands out. It feels rather awkward that a president of the Republic of Korea ⓔof which institutional foundation lies in liberal democracy uses the term.
For the past 10 years, there has been ⓕa boom to build super tall skyscrapers, particularly in Asia. The Burj Dubai, which will be higher than 800 meters, and the Russia Tower, 649 meters, are under construction. On completion, they will ⓖbreak records again.

ⓐ happiness of people  the people’s happiness 사람의 경우 소유격 표현은 일반적으로 ~‘s 로 나타냄
ⓑ 북한이라는 특정 지역 주민을 뜻하므로 the 추가
ⓒ on the guest book  in a guest book 지면 위에 글을 쓴다기 보다는 방명록 안에 어떠한 내용을 썼음을 나타내고 있으므로 전치사 in으로 수정. 모든 사람들이 알고 있는 특정 방명록이 아니라 방명록 중에 하나이므로 the를 a로 수정
ⓓ upon his visit of  upon visiting 영어에 자연스러운 표현으로 수정
ⓔ of which  whose 소유격 관계대명사의 경우 ‘of which 명사’의 형태는 이를 용인하지 않는학자도 있으므로 권장하지 않음

After proofreading
“May the people’s happiness come from the sanctuary of the people’s sovereignty,” President Roh wrote in a guest book upon visiting Pyongyang’s parliament.
The term people, inmin in Korean, instantly stands out. It feels rather awkward that a president of the Republic of Korea, whose institutional foundation lies in liberal democracy, uses the term.

더구나 이 인민이란 단어는 조선민주주의인민공화국•중화인민공화국•라오스인민민주공화국의 명칭에서 나타나듯 사회주의를 표방하는 국가의 전유물처럼 돼 버린 지 오래다. 그 가치가 전혀 다른 대한민국의 노무현 대통령이 북한에서 이 단어를 공개적으로 사용한 것은 부적절했지 싶다. 모처럼의 남북 정상회담이 큰 성과를 거두기 바라는 마음이다. 그러나 한국사회의 정체성을 간혹 잊는 듯한 대통령의 행보가 염려스러운 것은 지금 이 순간에도 마찬가지다.

Moreover the term in-min, or people ⓐin English translation, has appeared in the names of socialist countries such as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, People's Republic of China, and People's Democratic Republic of Laos, establishing the word to be a sole appropriation of socialist regimes. That ⓑPresident Roh of the Republic of Korea, which holds a wholly different ⓒpolitical principle, publicly uses the term in-min in North Korea ⓓsounds highly inappropriate, ⓔhowever much one tries to understand. Who would not hope the inter-Korean summit which finally took place after a long interval should have considerable achievements? However, I am in the meantime concerned with the steps taken by the president for they occasionally blur the identity of ⓕthe modern Korean society.

ⓒ political principle  set of political principles 정치적 가치가 하나가 아니라 여러 개임

ⓔ however much  no matter how hard 영어에 자연스러운 표현으로 수정
ⓕ the를 쓸 만큼 구체적이지 않으므로 the 삭제

That the president of the Republic of Korea, which holds a wholly different set of political principles, publicly uses the term inmin in North Korea is highly inappropriate, no matter how hard one tries to understand. Who would not hope the inter-Korean summit which finally took place after a long interval should have considerable achievements? However, I am in the meantime concerned with the steps taken by the president for they occasionally blur the identity of modern Korean society.
