A political charge felt in seaside air at Pusan film fest
JoongAng Daily 1면 기사 Monday, October 8, 2007BUSAN ― Attracting everyone from master filmmakers to cinephiles to Busan residents, the Pusan International Film Festival here has gotten off to a smooth start, highlighted by a number of politically driven films in the wake of the inter-Korean summit agreement signed last week.

유명 영화제작자부터 영화 팬과 부산 시민들까지 모두의 마음을 사로잡으며 부산국 영화제가 순조롭게 개막했다. 지난주 남북 정상회담 합의가 발표된 이후라서 정치적 내용을 다룬 영화들이 영화제를 더욱 돋보이게 했다.
Long queues for tickets have been starting around 6 a.m., well before the ticket offices open.
In its 12th year now, a growing number of films are premiering here from all over the world. Chinese director Feng Xiaogang kicked the festival off Thursday with a screening of “Assembly,” focusing on China’s civil war in 1948 between the nationalists and communists.

매표소가 문을 열기도 훨씬 전인 오전 6시쯤부터 표를 사려는 사람들이 길게 줄지어 섰다. 올해로 12년째인 이번 영화제에는 전세계에서 출품된 초연 영화들이 예전보다 더 많이 상영된다. 중국 펑 샤오강 감독이 그의 영화 ‘집결호’를 상영하면서 목요일 영화제를 개막했다. ‘집결호’는 민족주의자들과 공산주의자들 사이의 1948년 중국 내전을 다룬 영화다.
On Saturday, Korean director Kong Mi-yeun premiered her documentary“Battlefield Calling,” about the lives of Korean soldiers and how their views are changed by the conflicts they see.
“I began this project when I realized that for this generation, war is not some thing that happens to other people,” Kong said, according to Agence France-Presse.

토요일에는 전쟁을 목격한 한국 군인들의 삶과 인생관이 어떻게 변화하는 지를 다룬 공미연 감독의 다큐멘터리 ‘전장에서 나는’이 상영된다. AFP에 따르면, 공 감독은 “이 세대에서도 전쟁이 남에게만 일어나는 일이 아니라는 사실을 깨닫고서 이 작업을 시작했다.”고 말했다.
In a bid to grab a piece of the spotlight,Korea’s presidential contenders, Lee
Myung-bak, Chung Dong-young and Kwon Yong-gil stepped on the red carpet on Thursday. The heroes of the festival,however, were from the celluloid.

이명박, 정동영, 권영길 등 한국의 대통령 후보들도 세인의 주목을 받으려고 목요일 붉은 융단을 밟았다.그러나, 영화제의 주인공은 바로 영화관계자들이었다.
Dozens of star filmmakers and actors,including heartthrob actors Takuya Kimura from Japan and Kang Dongwon from Korea, plied the theaters along Haeundae beach on Saturday. Master filmmakers also made the rounds. Volker Schlondorff, the renowned postwar German director whose works include “The Tin Drum,” lectured cinephiles and aspiring filmmakers yesterday. These lectures, called “master class” sections, are some of the festival’s top attractions.

일본의 키무라 타쿠야와 한국의 강동원 등 꽃미남 배우들을 포함한 수십 명의 영화제작자들과 영화배우들이토요일 해운대 해변 주변의 영화관들을 찾아 다녔다. 거장 영화감독들도 방문했다. ‘양철북’으로 유명한 전후 독일의 거장 폴커 슐렌도르프 감독은 어제 영화팬과 영화감독 지망생들에게 강의를 했다. 거장들의 강연은 이번 영화제에서 가장 관객들이 많이 찾는 행사들 중 하나다.
