Every little thing she does is magic

Magic whether it’d be card tricks, floating tables or a disappearing act has never stop to fascinate people young or old alike. It is surely a world of mystery and fantasy filled with deceptive illusions regardless of what century we live in.

카드를 이용한 속임수건 테이블이 날아 오르거나 감쪽같이 사라지는 것이건 마술은 어른과 어린이를 늘 매혹시켜 왔다. 우리가 어떤 시대를 살건 마술은 믿을 수 없는 환상으로 가득 찬 미스터리와 팬터지의 세계다.

For nearly three decades Chung Eun-sun has been entertaining her audience with a wide variety of tricks up her sleeves. Her favorite happens to be an act where countless cash mysteriously keeps flowing out from both her hands while the sound of jazz beat in the background. For sure the cash weren’t coming up from her sleeves.

30년 가까이 정은선씨는 그녀의 소매 속에 숨긴 다양한 속임수를 이용해 관객들을 즐겁게 해 왔다. 그녀가 가장 좋아하는 마술은 재즈가 배경음악으로 깔리는 가운데 양 손에서 셀 수 없을 만큼 많은 현금이 끝없이 쏟아져 나오는 것이다. 물론 그 많은 현금이 그녀의 소매 속에 숨어 있을 수는 없을 것이다.

“I developed this act because what people love the most is money and it never fails to entertain the crowd,” said Chung.
정씨는 “사람들이 가장 좋아하는 것은 역시 돈이기 때문에 이 마술을 개발했죠. 관객들의 흥미를 끄는 데 실패한 적이 없어요”라고 말했다.

Other than that the woman magician is the president of The Korean Magician Society, Chung stands out among the rest of magicians here just by the fact that she is the first female magicians. There are no official records of any other magicians of her sex gender. “When I first started doing tricks on stage, the magic industry was run by men,” Chung recalled.

한국 마술협회의 회장을 맡고 있는 정은선 씨는 무엇보다 한국 최초의 여성 직업 마술사라는 것으로 유명하다. 여성으로 그녀 이전에 마술사로 공식 등록한 사람은 아무도 없다.
정씨는 “처음 무대에 서서 마술을 시작했을 때, 마술 업계는 남자들뿐이었죠”라고 회상했다.

Even today the number of female magician according to Chung is hard to come by. “There are 1,500 magicians as members of the magician society,” said Chung. “But female magician only accounts for 10 percent.”

정씨에 따르면 오늘날에도 여성 마술사는 거의 만나기 어려울 정도로 적다.
정씨는 “마술협회에는 1500명의 마술사가 회원으로 있는데 여성 마술사는 전체의 10퍼센트 정도에 불과하다”고 말했다.
The magician, who did not disclose her age citing that like her magic tricks, the age of a magician remains a secret, said it wasn’t her intension to become a magician. It wasn’t her dream or her ambition. It all started with her nature of curiosity. Chung said she grew up in a very conservative house with her father being an oriental medicine doctor with a tight upbringing. Anything that was even close to magic that she came close to was reading a comic book on the invisible man.

자신의 마술 기법을 밝힐 수 없는 것처럼 나이도 비밀이라는 정씨는 처음부터 마술사가 되려고 했던 것은 아니라고 말했다. 마술사가 되겠다고 꿈꾸거나 야망을 품은 적이 없다는 것이다. 모든 것은 그녀의 타고난 호기심 때문이었다.
정씨는 엄한 양육 태도를 가진 한의사 아버지를 둔 보수적인 가정에서 자랐다. 마술 비슷한 것과 접할 수 있었던 유일한 경험은 투명 인간을 다룬 만화책을 읽은 것뿐이었다.

“I would sit in front of the book store until the latest edition came out and then I would read it and go back home,” Chung said. She said she never actually had any ambition of pursing the career of a magician or considered herself destined to be a magician. “It all came accidentally and naturally,” Chung said.
정씨는 “만화가게 앞에서 그 만화의 최신판이 나오기를 기다렸다가 읽고 가곤 했다”고 말했다.
그녀는 마술사가 되기 위한 야망도 없었고 스스로 마술사가 될 운명이라고 생각한 적도 없었다. 정씨는 “모든 것은 우연히, 그리고 자연스럽게 일어났다”고 말했다.

The woman magician said it all started with a crush on a Korean language teacher in high school she had a crush on. “I wanted him all to myself so I started to read books on mind control,” Chung said. “I wanted him to like me and only me,” Chung added with a broad smile spread across her face.

이 여성 마술사는 모든 것이 고교 시절 국어 선생님을 짝사랑하면서 시작됐다고 말했다. 정씨는 “국어 선생님을 내 것으로 만들겠다는 일념에 마인드 컨트롤에 관한 책을 읽기 시작했다”며 “국어 선생님을 오직 나만 좋아하게 만들고 싶었다”고 말하며 환하게 웃었다.
Even in college she majored in psychology so she could learn more on mind reading. From mind control she naturally took interest in magic, which is in part a mind reading in Chung’s interpretation.

대학에서도 그녀는 심리학을 전공하면서 다른 사람의 마음을 읽는 법을 더 배우게 됐다.
마인드 컨트롤을 배우면서 그녀는 마술에도 관심을 갖게 됐다. 정씨는 마술을 일종의 마음 읽기라고 생각한다.
