One-time 'Kingmaker' backs Lee Myung-bak

　During a day of political realignment, the so-called "kingmaker" sided with front-runner Lee Myung-bak. Senior independent lawmaker Chung Mong-joon, the sixth son of late Hyundai founder Chung Ju-yung, announced yesterday he will join the conservative party and stump for Lee.

　정치세력 재편으로 요동친 어제 소위 '킹메이커'가 대선 선두주자 이명박 후보를 지지했다. 현대 창업주 고 정주영 회장의 여섯째 아들인 정몽준 무소속 중견 국회의원이 한나라당에 입당해서 이명박 후보 지지하겠다고 어제 발표했다.

　"My heart is throbbing like the time I first became a lawmaker in 1988," Chung said yesterday at a press conference inside the Grand National Party's headquarters. Chung, also the vice president of the world soccer organization FIFA, became known as the "kingmaker" when he formed an alliance with Roh Moo-hyun a month before the 2002 election, the year Korea co-hosted the World Cup.

　"1988년 처음 국회의원으로 당선됐을 때처럼 제 가슴이 뜁니다." 한나라당 당사에서 어제가진 기자회견에서 정 의원이 말했다. FIFA 부회장이기도 한 정 의원은 한국이 월드컵을 개최했던 2002년 그 해 대통령 선거일 한달 전쯤 노무현 후보와 연대한 일로 '킹메이커'로 알려지게 됐다.

Before starting the press conference, Lee welcomed Chung with open arms and the two shared a hug. Kang Jae-sup, chairman of the Grand National Party, handed Chung a bouquet of flowers. "We welcome you from the bottom of our hearts," he said.

　기자회견을 열기 전에, 이명박 후보는 두 팔을 벌리고 정 의원을 환영하면서 포옹했다. 강재섭 한나라당 대표는 정 의원에게 "진심으로 환영한다"며 꽃다발을 전달했다.

Meanwhile Lee Hoi-chang, a former Grand National Party member who became an independent to run for president, had a surprise announcement of his own yesterday.
Sim Dae-pyung, the lawmaker who founded the Chungcheong-based People First Party, announced he would rescind his minor presidential candidacy to support Lee Hoi-chang.

　한편 전 한나라당 총재였다가 무소속으로 대선에 출마한 이회창 후보도 어제 깜짝 놀랄 발표를 내놓았다. 충청도를 기반으로 한 국민중심당을 창당한 심대평 의원이 대선후보를 포기하고 이회창 후보를 지지한다고 발표했다.

　At a press conference with Lee yesterday, Chung said he made the wrong choice five years ago when he supported Roh, although he withdrew his support the night before the election and went back to being an independent.
5년 전 대선 때 비록 선거일 바로 전날 밤 지지를 철회하고 무소속으로 되돌아갔지만 노무현 후보를 지지한 것은 잘못한 선택이었다고 정 의원은 어제 기자회견에서 말했다.

　"I was hoping that he [Roh] would measure up to the people's expectations, but his administration made more mistakes than accomplishments and he disappointed a lot of people," Chung said. "The economy's bad and the inter-Korean relationship is going wrong. I believe Lee Myung-bak is the best man."

　정 의원은 "그(노무현)가 국민들의 기대에 부응할 것이라고 기대했었다. 그러나 그의 정부는 업적보다 실책을 더 많이 쌓았고 많은 사람들을 실망시켰다."고 말했다. "경제상황은 나쁘고 남북관계도 좋지 않다. 이명박 후보가 최선이라고 생각한다."

　Lee Hoi-chang's camp scoffed at the alliance, releasing a statement criticizing Chung for making the same mistake that he did five years ago. Lee Hoi-chang lost that election to Roh, who got a lift from Chung's late endorsement.

이회창 캠프는 정 의원이 5년 전에 했던 것과 똑 같은 실수를 또 저지르고 있다고 비판하는 논평을 내놓으면서 그 연대를 비웃었다.
