This collector’s toy story is one of joy

In the upcoming film “Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium” whimsy rules in an enchanted toy shop. But for those who will see the film and sigh wistfully, it seems Korea has its own real-life Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium. It’s called 20th Century Boy and Girl, a toy museum in Heiri, Paju.

When an adult first steps into 20th Century Boy and Girl, it’d be an understatement to say it’s an amazing experience. For those nostalgic for their youth, it’s a dream come true. Adults are struck speechless as they wander the room full of Korean toys that date back as far as they can remember.

The toy museum’s interior replicates the streets of old Korea before flashy neon signs took over. Small stores display old 1960s and 1970s records and discontinued magazines like Sunday Seoul are stacked next to each other.

장난감 박물관의 내부 장식은 한국에 네온 사인의 화려한 불빛이 나타나기 전 옛 모습을 재현하고 있다. 작은 가게들에는 60년대와 70년대의 오래된 음반과, 이제는 더 이상 발행되지 않는 ‘선데이 서울’ 같은 잡지들이 가득 쌓여 있다.

A moment later, a chubby man in black-rimmed glasses with a neat black beard emerged from one of the storage areas. He was Hyun Tae-joon, the collector of these toys who opened the museum this August.

잠시 후 검은 테 안경을 낀 깔끔한 구레나룻의 땅딸막한 남자가 창고에서 나왔다. 그는 장난감 수집가로 지난 8월에 이 박물관을 연 현태준씨다.
Pulling up a small stool that disappeared when he sat on it, Hyun, 41, said there are more than 5,000 toys displayed in his museum. “There’s an additional stock of 10,000 toys,” Hyun said. “I just don’t have the space to put them on shelves here.”
앉으면 아예 보이지도 않는 작은 의자를 끌고 와 앉은 41세의 현씨는 박물관에 있는 장난감이 5000개가 넘는다고 말했다. 현씨는 “진열하지 않은 장난감이 1만개도 넘는다”며 “장난감들 을 모두 진열할 공간이 없을 정도”라고 말했다.
On Hyun’s business card he lists toy collector, cartoonist, illustrator and essayist as his occupations. He said collecting toys accounts for only one-third of his work.
현씨의 명함에는 장난감 수집가, 만화가, 삽화가 겸 수필가라고 적혀 있었다. 그는 장난감 수집이 자신의 업무 중 3분의 1 정도에
불과하다고 말했다.
Hyun has been collecting Korean toys for more than a decade. “I was traveling abroad in the late 1990s and noticed how in foreign countries they had stores that displayed toys of bygone eras. I wondered if we had a similar store,” Hyun said.
Upon his return, he started looking for old toys that he used to play with.

그는 10년 넘게 한국 장난감을 수집해 왔다.현씨는 “90년대 말에 해외를 여행하면서 많은 나라에 흘러간 시절의 장난감들을 진열한 가게가 있다는 것을 알게 됐다”며 “우리나라에도 비슷한 가게를 열면 어떨까 하고 생각했다”고 말했다. 귀국 후 그는 예전 자신이 가지고 놀던 오래된 장난감들을 찾아 나서기 시작했다.
