Korea’s Noah builds ark to save Earth

The air held a hostile chill and snow was falling
the day I met environmentalist and artist Lee
Hwan.
It wasn’t the heavy, watery mix that had fallen
a few days before but the light, fluffy kind. A
layer began to cover the roof of Lee’s museum in
Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi, where we had arranged
to meet.

며칠 전에 내린 무겁고 질퍽한 눈과는 달리 가볍고 솜털 같은 눈
이었다. 눈은 이씨를 만나기로 한 경기도 양평의 미술관 지붕을 덮
고 있었다.
“Come in. Wow, it’s finally freezing up outside.
Isn’t it great?” Lee beckoned from inside the cafe
he’d designed inside a disused railway carriage.
Lee has just wrapped up a large-scale
exhibition in Yeouido, Seoul, titled “The Green
Ark,” which featured a giant 36.5-meter-long,
6.5-meter-deep ark in the middle of the
business and commercial district.

이씨는 버려진 철도 객차를 이용해 스스로 꾸민 카페 안에서 “들
어와요. 드디어 추운 날씨가 됐네, 대단하죠?”하고 말하며 나를
불렀다.
그는 최근 서울 여의도에서 열린 “초록 방주’라는 제목의 대형
전시회를 막 끝냈다. 상업 지역 한 가운데에서 열린 전시회는 길이
36.5미터, 깊이 6.5미터의 거대한 방주가 등장해 눈길을 끌었다.
The ark, which was supported by the Ministry
of Environment, was built out of recycled
material including pipes, farm tools, old tires
and even an abandoned motorcycle.

환경부의 후원을 받아 만든 방주는 쇠파이프, 농기구, 폐타이어
를 비롯해 버려진 오토바이 등 각종 재활용품으로 만든 것이었다.
“There’s an obvious pun to this work [the green
ark] regarding Noah’s ark. I built it as a warning,
to make people appreciate the risks of climate
change,” he said.

이씨는 “‘초록방주’라는 말은 물론 노아의 방주를 빗대 지은 이
름이에요. 사람들에게 기후 변화의 위험성을 알리기 위해 만들었
죠”라고 말했다.
Lee’s aim was to build a structure so massive
that its sheer size would ram home the message
that climate change is indeed a weighty issue.
Unless you have been living down a mineshaft
for the last decade, global warming is the biggest
threat facing this planet, one that will not go
away and which too many countries are doing too
little to solve.

이씨가 그런 대규모 구조물을 만든 이유는 크기가 거대하면 기
후 변화가 그만큼 육중한 이슈라는 메시지를 분명하게 전달할 것
으로 봤기 때문이다.
지난 십 년 간 캄캄한 갱도 밑바닥에서 살아온 사람이 아니라면
기후 온난화 문제는 현재 지구를 위협하는 가장 심
각한 위협으로 결코 사라지지 않을 문제인데도 많은
국가들이 해결책 마련에 제대로 나서지 않고 있음을
누구나 알 수 있을 것이다.
