Terror in Icheon as chemical fire engulfs victims

A refrigerated warehouse caught fire in Icheon, south of Seoul, trapping workers inside the toxic blaze and taking 30 lives as of late last night, while as many as 10 people remained missing, according to local fire officials. About 500 firefighters battled the blaze.

소방관계자들에 따르면 경기 이천 냉동창고에서 어제 발생한 대형화재로 안에서 일하던 인부들이 유독가스를 뿜어내는 불에 갇혀 30명이 죽고 10명이 실종됐다. 500여명의 소방관들이 출동해 화재를 진압했다.

Seven workers escaped unharmed from an inferno that raged out of control for hours, while 10 other survivors were hospitalized, three in critical condition.

몇 시간 동안 통제불능 상태로 사납게 타오른 지옥에서 인부 7명은 무사히 탈출했다. 탈출에 성공한 다른 10명은 병원으로 옮겨져 치료를 받고 있고 그 중 3명은 중태다.

Additional fatalities are feared because of toxic urethane fumes that can knock out or even kill a person in minutes, according to Ahn Sang-cheol, the chief of the Icheon Fire Department. Those who couldn't escape the building quickly would likely have been exposed to the chemical smoke for hours.
안상철 이천소방서장에 따르면 몇 분 안에 사람을 혼절시키거나 죽일 수도 있는 유독성 우레탄 가스 때문에 추가 사망자 발생이 우려된다. 냉동창고를 곧바로 탈출하지 못했던 인부들은 유독가스에 장시간 노출됐을 것이다.

Fifty-seven people were working inside the building at the time of the fire, which was followed by a series of explosions, according to witnesses. There could be additional victims because of possible visitors to the building, Ahn said.

목격자들에 따르면, 화재가 발생할 때 건물 안에서 57명이 작업을 하고 있었고 화재 직후에 폭발이 여러 차례 이어졌다. 작업 인부 외에 그 건물에 들어간 방문객들이 있을 지도 모르기 때문에 추가 희생자가 있을 수 있다고 안 소방서장은 말했다.
Many family members who didn't know the whereabouts of their loved ones were wailing in desperation last night near the building as firefighters looked for survivors in the wreckage.

소방관들이 어제 밤 잔해 속에서 생존자를 찾고 있는 동안 건물 인근에서는 자기 가족의 생사를 알지 못하는 피해자 가족들이 절망 속에서 울부짖고 있었다.
The cold storage facility became a death trap because it was built using urethane foam insulation, which produces a highly toxic gas when it burns, according to an official of the Icheon Fire Department.

이천소방서 관계자에 따르면 불에 타면서 유독성 가스를 내뿜는 우레탄폼 단열재를 사용해서 지어졌기 때문에 냉동창고는 죽음의 덫으로 돌변했다.

Thick black columns of smoke covered the sky above the warehouse complex, which is located in an isolated area. About 600 residents were evacuated from a nearby town as firefighters worried about the possible effects of the lethal fumes.

두꺼운 검은 연기 기둥들이 한적한 지역에 위치한 냉동창고 단지의 하늘을 뒤덮었다. 치명적 연기로 인한 추가 피해를 우려한 소방관들이 단지 옆 동네 주민 6백여 명을 긴급 대피시켰다.

As hundreds of firefighters rushed to the area in the morning, the toxic fumes prevented them from entering the building for several hours as additional explosions were heard inside the building. Firefighters finally entered the structure at about 2:30 p.m., almost four hours after the blaze started.

수백 명의 소방관들이 아침에 화재발생 지역으로 출동했으나 건물 안에서 추가 폭발이 이어진 가운데 뿜어져 나오는 유독가스 때문에 몇 시간 동안 건물 안으로 들어가지 못했다. 화재발생 이후 거의 4시간이 지난 오후 2시30분쯤에 마침내 소방관들이 건물 안으로 들어갔다.
