Ailing herbal medical area needs cure

The weather is frigid as I step outside the Jegi-dong subway station. But the cold doesn’t appear to deter people from
visiting Kyungdong street market in Dongdaemun District, central Seoul.
*frigid : 몹시 추운, 추위가 지독한

지하철 제기동역을 빠져 나오자 찬 바람이 살을 에는 듯했다. 하지만 그런 강추위도 경동시장을 찾는 사람들을 발길을 막지는 못하는 듯 했다.

Today, the 48-year-old market is even more packed than usual. It’s no wonder the Lunar New Year is coming. The shorter days mean there’s less time to shop, meaning a higher concentration of people during daylight hours.
*concentration : 집결, 집중

요즘 평소 보다 더 많은 사람들이 48년 역사의 경동시장을 찾는다. 전통 명절인 설을 앞둔 때문이다. 겨울철엔 해가 짧아 물건 살 수 있는 시간 이 적기에 낮에 더 많은 사람들이 몰려든다.
As I jockey for space in a sea of people drifting through the market stalls, I feel like I’ve time warped into a scene straight from the Korean War era. Back then, farmers from northern Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces swarmed around Cheongnyangni Station and the former Seongdong Station, now a shopping center, to sell farm and forest products.

수많은 사람들 틈을 비집고 시장을 돌아다니며 마치 시간을 거슬러 한국전쟁 시절의 한 장면 속으로 빠져드는 착각이 들었다. 당시 경기 북부 지역과 강원도 농부들은 농작물을 팔기 위해 청량리역과 지금은 쇼핑센터로 바뀐 성동역으로 몰려들었다.
But Kyungdong market is different from Seoul’s other street markets; it is the city’s cheapest and boasts an astonishing variety of goods.
As I weave my way around thousands of stands, stalls and shops, I spot everything from dry goods to heaped bowls of bbeondegi, or roasted silkworm larvae.

경동시장은 서울에서 물건값이 가장 싸고 매우 다양한 물건을 판다는 점에서 다른 시장과 차별화 된다.
시장 안의 수많은 상점과 노점, 매대에서는 건어물에서 번데기에 이르기까지 수많은 물건을 판다.
But even more intriguing are the stalls of medicinal ingredients. Roasted bugs are nothing compared to live reptiles, fungi the size of my head, snake-headed fish and even dog meat. The regulars at Kyungdong market, however, don’t bat an eye.

무엇보다도 약재을 파는 곳이 눈길을 끈다. 살아 움직이는 파충류, 머리 만한 버섯, 가물치에서 뭔지 모를 구운 벌레까지 없는 것이 없이 없었다. 심지어 개고기까지. 하지만 경동시장에서 그렇게 기이한 것만 파는 것은 아니다.
With my curiosity piqued, I head back toward the station to visit Seoul Yangnyeongsi, a traditional Korean medicine market. Here, the musty scent of boiled herbs wafts from some 800 Oriental medicine dispensaries.

경동시장에서의 호기심을 간직한 채 지하철역 쪽에 있는 한약 재료를 파는 약령시로 향했다.그 곳에선 800여개의 약재상에서 풍겨오는 퀘퀘한 냄새가 코를 찔렀다.
Seoul Yangnyeongsi was born during King Hyojong’s reign in the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). The site, before receiving its official
name of Yangnyeongsi, has roots in Bojaewon, an agency that used to provide health care for the poor during the Joseon Dynasty.
*reign : 통치, 지배, 군림.
서울 약령시는 조선조(1932-1910) 효종때 부터 시작됐다. 약령시가 있는 곳은 조선시대 가난한 사람들에게 의료 혜택을 제공하던 보재원의 터다.
