GNP chairman wants Lee aide to resign

The fissure within the Grand National Party over lawmaker nominations between the president-elect and the former party chairwoman widened yesterday. A few minutes after midnight, Grand National Party Chairman Kang Jae-sup held a press conference to demand that Lee Bang-ho, the party's secretary general and an aide to the president-elect, resign.

공천문제로 이명박 대통령 당선인측과 박근혜 전 대표측 사이에 갈라진 한나라당 내부 균열이 어제 더욱 커졌다. 자정이 지난 시각에 강재섭 한나라당 대표가 기자회견을 열어 당 사무총장이자 이명박의 측근인 이방호 사무총장에게 사퇴를 요구했다.

"I cannot work with Lee Bang-ho over the nomination issue," Kang said in a hastily called press conference at his residence in Bundang. "I had told him that the party's regulations might be unconstitutional and Lee said he understood. Then he stabbed me in the back when the issue was actually discussed in the nomination evaluation committee." Lee refused to resign.

강 대표는 분당 자택에서 긴급 기자회견을 열어 "공천문제를 놓고 이방호 총장과는 일을 같이 못하겠다"고 말했다. "그에게 당 규정에 위헌 소지가 있다고 말했다. 이 총장이 알겠다고 말해놓고는 공천심사위원회에서 그 문제를 실제로 논의할 때 내 뒤통수를 쳤다." 이방호 사무총장은 사퇴요구를 거절했다.

The two sides are battling about regulations in the party that would bar lawmakers who have been convicted of wrongdoing in the past from running for office in the April elections, in which every seat in the National Assembly will be chosen.

과거 부정부패로 형이 확정된 경우 4월 총선 출마를 위한 공천 신청을 불허하는 당규에 관해 양측이 싸우고 있다.

Ultimately, it's a power struggle between former GNP Chairwoman Park Geun-hye and President-elect Lee Myung-bak. Park narrowly lost a bitter GNP primary to Lee last year. According to the polls, the Grand National candidates will win most of the National Assembly seats.

궁극적으로 이것은 박근혜 전 당대표와 이명박 대통령 당선인 사이의 권력투쟁이다. 박 전 대표는 지난해 한나라당 경선에서 이 대통령 당선인에게 근소한 차이로 패배했다. 여론조사들에 따르면 한나라당 후보들이 국회 의석의 대부분을 차지할 것이다.

Park's side had opposed applying strict ethics rules to keep candidates from being nominated to run, because that would restrict more pro-Park candidates from running.
However, the faction said yesterday it would support an even stronger enforcement of the ethics code.
박근혜측은 더 많은 친박 후보들의 공천을 제한하기 때문에 공천신청을 제한하는 윤리규정을 엄격하게 적용하는 것에 반대해왔다. 그런데, 친박 진영은 어제 윤리규정을 더 엄격하게 적용할 것을 요구했다.

Anyone convicted of violating any election law, any corruption law or even disciplined by the National Assembly's ethics committee should be barred from being nominated, the group of 28 lawmakers and 42 senior party members said yesterday. That might have the effect of barring more Lee loyalists from running.

박 전 대표측 의원 28명과 원외 당협위원장 42명은 부패 전력자에 선거법 위반자와 파렴치범, 윤리위 징계자까지 모두 공천대상에서 제외시키라고 요구했다. 이렇게 되면 이명박 당선인측 핵심인사들이 더 많이 공천대상에서 제외된다.
