United New Democratic Party Chairman Sohn Hak-kyu has made determined efforts/ to ratify the U.S.-South Korea free trade agreement.① 대통합민주신당(UNDP)의 손학규 대표는 (②) 결의에 찬 모습을 보여 줘 왔다./ ② 한·미 자유무역협정(FTA) 비준 동의안을 처리하겠다는
In a meeting with journalists in Daegu on Thursday,/ Sohn said, “I have consistently supported the free trade agreement,/ and I will not hide my position after becoming head of the UNDP.”
① 목요일 대구에서 열린 기자간담회에서,/ ② 손 대표는 “(자신은) FTA를 일관되게 찬성해 왔고, (③) 말했다./ ③ 신당의 대표가 됐다고 입장을 감추고 싶지 않다”고
He said, “If possible,/ the free trade agreement should be ratified/ before the February legislative session ends.”
① 그는 “가능하다면 (② / ③) 말했다./ ③ 한·미 FTA 비준동의안을 인준해야 한다”고/ ② 2월 국회 회기가 끝나기 전에
Sohn promised to put forth efforts to ratify it as soon as possible,/ adding “I see the deadline as the end of the term of the current lawmakers [in April].”
손 대표는 가능한 빨리 비준안을 통과시키기 위해 노력하겠다고 약속하면서,/ “저는 마지막 데드라인(최종시한)을 현 국회의원의 임기(17대 국회) 종료[4월] 전에 처리하는 것으로 생각한다”고 덧붙였다.
This is a rare, responsible and courageous remark by a politician.
이는 근자에 보기 드물게 책임 있고 용기 있는 정치인이 한 발언이 아닐 수 없다.
We praise Sohn’s determination/ and urge him to keep his promise to the people.
우리는 손 대표의 결단에 찬사를 보내며/ 그가 국민과의 약속을 반드시 지킬 것을 당부한다.
We understand/ that many UNDP lawmakers object to the ratification.

For Sohn to pass the agreement,/ he has to fight internal opposition/ and face the possibility of losing votes in the legislative elections.
손 대표가 비준동의안을 통과시키려면,/ 그는 당내 반발과 싸워 나가야 하고/ 총선에서 표를 잃을 가능성에 맞닥뜨릴 수밖에 없다.
Sohn knows the reality of this better than anyone else.
손 대표 어느 누구보다도 스스로도 이런 현실을 잘 알고 있다.
“On the eve of the legislative elections,/ it is not easy to convince lawmakers representing farming regions and/ lawmakers who object to the ratification based on their ideology and political convictions,”/ Sohn said.

Looking beyond immediate gain for his party/ and making the national interest a top priority/ is the highest virtue of a true political leader,/ and resolving conflict and opposition through persuasion/ is a fundamental of leadership.
당을 위한 즉각적인 이득을 초월하는 것(당리당략을 떠나는 것)과/ 국익을 우선하는 것이야말로/ 진정한 정치 지도자의 첫 번째 덕목이요,/ 갈등과 반발을 설득을 통해 해소하는 것이야말로/ 리더십의 본질이다.
Sohn has demonstrated a glimmer of this. 손 대표는 그 가능성의 일단을 보여줬다.
We hope/ he exercises his pragmatic leadership fully/ and shows his virtue as a great political leader.

According to a media poll,/ a majority of current lawmakers agree to the free trade agreement as individuals,/ but believe it is difficult for the current assembly to ratify the accord.
한 언론 조사에 따르면,/ 17대 국회의원들 가운데 다수는 개인적으로 한·미 FTA에 찬성하지만/ 17대 국회가 비준안을 통과시키는 어렵다고 믿고 있는 것으로 나타났다.
While they believe/ that the Korea-U.S. free trade agreement benefits the nation’s interests,/ they do not want to step out and vote for it/ because they are scared of losing votes in the April elections.

We urge lawmakers to stop being spineless.
우리는 17대 의원들이 결단력이 없는 자세를 버릴 것(대오각성 할 것)을 촉구한다.
