Chemical leak raises water fears in Gumi City

A toxic chemical, assumed to have leaked from a chemical factory that caught on fire Saturday, was found in the Nakdong River yesterday, causing the water supply for Gumi City to be suspended for several hours.

토요일 화재가 발생했던 화학 공장으로부터 유출된 것으로 보이는 유독성 화학물질이 어제 낙동강에서 검출돼 경북 구미시에 수돗물 공급이 몇 시간 동안 중단됐다.
It is the second time the river has been contaminated by phenol, and the incident raised fears of a repeat of a disastrous phenol leak from an electronics company in 1991.

The Korea Water Resources Corporation said 0.01 part per million (ppm) of phenol was found in the Nakdong River near the Sungseon Bridge five kilometers away from a waterworks at 5:50 a.m. yesterday and the concentration reached its peak of 0.04 ppm at 8:30 a.m. There were no reports of injuries from the phenol yesterday. The amount allowed in drinking water is 0.005 ppm.

한국수자원공사는 어제 오전 5시50분쯤 취수장의 5km 상류지역인 숭선대교 부근 강물에서 페놀 0.01 ppm이 검출됐고 이후 오전 8시30분쯤 0.04 ppm으로 그 농도가 최고치를 기록했다. 페놀로 인한 피해사례는 어제 보고되지 않았다. 마시는 물에 허용되는 페놀의 양은 0.005 ppm이다.
At around 10:40 a.m., the corporation stopped drawing water from the river. When the phenol levels dropped at about 3:45 p.m., normal water operations resumed on the river. Water supplies to about 40,000 households in the upper part of the city were disrupted for most of the day.

오전 10시40분쯤 수자원공사는 강물의 취수를 중단했다. 페놀 수치가 떨어진 오후 3시45분쯤 취수를 재개했다. 어제 하루 상당 시간 동안 구미시 북부지역 4만여가구에 수돗물 공급이 중단됐다.

구미시와 수자원공사에 따르면, 토요일 새벽 화재가 발생한 김천시의 코오롱유화 공장에서 페놀이 흘러나와 강물이 오염된 것으로 보인다. 플라스틱의 일종인 페놀수지를 생산하는 그 공장은 낙동강의 지류인 대광천에 인접해 있다. 토요일 새벽 3시10분쯤에 발생한 그 화재로 1명이 사망하고 14명이 부상을 입었으며 1명은 실종됐다.
Phenol can cause skin to peel and cause stomachache, nausea and paralysis if it enters the body through the respiratory system. When the toxic chemical is mixed with water, it creates carcinogenic substances.

페놀은 피부가 벗겨지게 하고 호흡기를 통해 몸에 들어오면 복통, 구토, 마비 증상을 일으킨다. 페놀이 수돗물과 섞이면 발암물질을 만들어낸다.
