조지 W 부시 대통령의 2001년 취임사는 ‘자유(freedom)’에 대한 찬양 일색이었다. 같은 단어를 27번 사용했고, 형용사(free)까지 합하면 자유라는 말은 45차례나 들어갔다. 그리고 이는 재임 중 이라크와 아프가니스탄에 대한 강경 노선으로 이어졌다. 취임사에서 그의 정치적 지향점을 그대로 드러난 셈이다. ‘동북아’라는 말을 취임사에서 18번이나 쓴 뒤 ‘동북아 균형자론’으로 나아간 노무현 대통령의 경우도 마찬가지였다.
