Rice ideas combat wheat threat

Farmers around Korea are sniffing the breeze and anticipating the advent of the rice-planting season. The average daytime temperature reaches 15 degrees Celsius in May, prompting farmers to pull on their knee-high rubber boots and start planting rice.
농부들은 코를 스치는 바람속에서 계절의 변화를 느끼고 모내기 할 때가 다가왔음을 안다. 낮 기온이 15도 정도가 되면 농부들은 기다란 고무 장화를 꺼내 신고 모내기에 나선다.

But for most rice farmers like Kim Chang-sun, the approaching season doesn’t look promising.
Kim, 72, says rice farming is a laborious task, especially when he hardly makes any cash these days.
“Ever since Western dining culture started to affect the eating preferences of Korean families, rice has been neglected,” said Kim, who owns a rice farm in Youngjong, Incheon.
그러나 김창순씨와 같은 대부분의 농부들에게 다가오는 농사철이 반가운 것만은 아니다.
인천 영종에서 농사를 짓고 있는 올해 일흔 둘의 김씨는 "농사는 매우 고된 일이고 특히 요즘엔 돈벌이도 거의 되지 않는다"고 어려움을 토로한다. "서구식 식습관이 생활속에 파고 들기 시작하면서 쌀의 중요성이 잊혀져 가고 있다"는 것이다.

Kim isn’t alone in feeling this way. Jeon Gwang-ok, a 70-year-old farmer from Siheung, Gyeonggi, is also having difficulty earning a living from growing rice. The situation is even worse for Jeon, especially when the future of his 72-acre plantation, which he has owned for more than 30 years, is at stake.
이런 어려움을 느끼는 게 김씨만은 아니다. 경기 시흥에서 역시 농사를 짓고 있는 전광옥(70)씨도 농사를 지어 생활하기가 어려운 형편이다. 전씨의 상황은 더 안좋다. 30년 이상 농사를 지어온 전씨가 가진 72에이커 규모의 논은 지금 위기에 처해있다.

“The area was once part of a greenbelt, a zone that limits industrial development, but in 2006 the Siheung city government began developing the area,” Jeon said with a sigh. Since then, industrial companies have been trying to buy the land to build houses and factories on it.
전씨는 "이 지역은 예전엔 개발이 제한되는 그린벨트 구역이었지만 2006년 시흥시가 개발을 시작했다"고 한숨지었다. 개발이 시작된 이후 기업들이 이 지역에 주택과 공장을 짓기 위해 땅을 사들이는 중이다.

When Jeon heard that fewer Koreans are consuming rice, according to the National Statistical Office, he began to frown.
According to the data, 87 kilograms of rice were consumed per person in 2002, but the amount decreased to 76.9 kilograms per person last year.
한국인의 쌀 소비량이 점점 줄고 있다는 소식은 그를 더욱 우울하게 만든다. 통계청에 따르면 2002년 1인당 87kg이던 쌀 소비량은 지난해에는 76.9kg으로 줄어들었다.

“With more working husbands and wives, families look for simple meals like bread, instant noodles or cereal,” said Ryu Bo-seon, an administrative official from the office.
Kim, the farmer, agrees. With the changing eating habits, it’s hard for farmers like us to live just by planting rice,” he said.
통계청 관계자는 "맞벌이 부부가 늘어나면서 사람들이 빵이나 즉석요리, 시리얼처럼 보다 간편한 식사들을 선호한다"고 말했다. 농부인 김씨도 여기에 동의한다. 그는 "식습관이 변하면서 농사 수입만으로는 우리같은 농부들이 멀고 살기 생활하기 어려워졌다"고 말했다.

The total income from 1,000 square meters of rice paddy was 854,241 won ($833.73) last year, which marked a 4.2 percent decrease from 2006.
The production costs per 1,000 square meters, on the other hand, increased 1.2 percent from 600,121 won in 2006 to 607,354 won last year, in large part because the cost of fertilizer and agrichemicals rose.
지난해 논 1000제곱미터에서 나오는 수익은 2006년 보다 4.2% 줄어든 85만4241원이었다. 하지만 1000제곱미터당 생산비용은 2006년 60만121원에서 지난해에는 60만7354원으로 1.2% 늘었다. 비료, 농약값이 오른 탓이 크다.

Meanwhile, the price of wheat is now close to the cost of imported rice, which naturally raised the price of bread, cookies and noodles.
President Lee Myung-bak and his cabinet ministers have suggested that farmers produce more rice products as an alternative to wheat.
한편 밀 가격은 현재 수입 쌀 가격에 육박하고 이는 자연스레 빵, 과자,라면 가격 인상으로 이어지고 있다. 이명박 대통령은 밀 대안품으로 쌀 가공품을 만들어야 한다고 제안했다.
