Galloping prices hurt people’s purchasing power

Consumer prices climbed at their fastest rate in nearly seven years in May, led by rises in petroleum and food, while Koreans’ purchasing power between January and March declined.

The Korea National Statistical Office said yesterday in a release that consumer prices rose 4.9 percent in May from a year earlier and 0.8 percent from the previous month.
통계청이 어제 발표한 자료에 따르면 5월의 소비자 물가는 전년동기 대비 4.9% 올랐으며 전월대비 0.8% 올랐다.
“International crude oil prices hit new highs in May, and the prices of petroleum products in Korea rose sharply,” said Kim Beom-seok, a director at the Ministry of Strategy and Finance’s economy policy department.

기획재정부 경제정책국 김범석 과장은 “국제 원유가격이 5월에 여러 번 최고치를 갱신해서 국내 석유제품 가격이 급격하게 상승 했다.”고 말했다.
The price of Dubai crude, Korea’s benchmark, soared by 15 percent in May compared to April.
Korea depends entirely on imports for its crude oil. Soaring raw material prices coupled with the weaker won are sending consumer prices steadily higher.

한국의 원유수입 기준인 두바이산 원유는 4월 대비 5월 가격이 무려 15%나 껑충 뛰었다. 한국은 원유를 전량 수입에 의존한다.
원화 약세와 더불어 원재료 가격이 급상승하면서 소비자 물가도 계속 오르고 있다.
Consumer prices rose 3.6 percent in February,
3.9 percent in March and 4.1 percent in April and 4.9 percent in May. The Korean won has fallen about 11 percent this year against the greenback, as demand for the U.S. currency grows to purchase raw materials.
