촛불

불을 켠다는 것은 어둠 속에서 진실함을 갈구하는 마음을 불러일으키는 행동이다. 종교적인 심성에서 볼 때 불을 켠다는 행위는 거룩하다. 가난한 사위국(舍衛國)의 한 여인이 석가모니가 한 사원에 찾아온다는 소식을 듣고 어려운 동냥 끝에 등 하나를 밝혀 공양한다는 얘기는 유명하다. 부자들이 마련한 불꽃은 새벽이 되자 모두 사그라들었지만 이 여인의 간절함이 담긴 등은 홀로 빛을 발하고 있었다는 ‘빈자일등(貧者一燈)’의 고사다.
