GALLERY ZANDARI

To July 13: “Imaginary Journey ? Park Hyung-geun’s Solo Exhibition.” Gallery Zandari is hosting photographer Park Hyung-geun’s solo exhibition.

Park studied art in London and Gwangju, and has staged solo exhibitions in Seoul, Daegu, Gwangju and also in the United Kingdom.

The Imaginary Journey exhibition aims to be an escape from daily routine. It features Park’s recent “A Voyage” and “Tenseless” series in Korea for the first time.

The artist’s work presents a conflict between familiarity and unfamiliarity by crossing everyday landscapes and surreal space.

This year Park Hyung-geun introduces new stories with deeper emotions to his images. Moreover, he brings surreal fantasies to reality and shares his pleasure with the audience through the familiar but unusual landscape of nature and attractive color tones.

Zandari means a small but solid bridge. The gallery aims to be a bridge between the public and art.

The gallery is open everyday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

NATIONAL THEATER OF KOREA

July 4 to Aug. 14: “Sky Walk.” The Lunatic musical company presents an extreme dance musical that features some of the top Korean B-boys.

Ki-won loves to dance, but an unfortunate accident at a dance contest leaves him disabled and unable to follow his dreams. Ten years later, Ki-won reappears on the scene as a high school teacher and meets a student named Hyun-joon, who loves basketball. Ki-won tries to help Hyun-joon and other students to participate in the national dance competition, where they combine basketball tricks with break-dancing in their unique choreography.

The show rides the current wave of B-boy popularity, which has seen B-boy culture move from underground to mainstream culture. B-boys have become cultural icons successfully spreading Korean culture around the world.

The show is staged at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. on weekdays (except Mondays); at 2, 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays; and 2 and 4:30 p.m. on Sundays.

SEJONG CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTS

July 9 to 20: “Canada Dream Circus Nebbia.” The acclaimed Nebbia circus team is visiting Seoul. Nebbia is a modern-style circus that mixes various performance elements, including the musical genre. It is unique in that compared to other circuses, it has a story.

Nebbia is about childhood memories and nostalgia for the past. The story is constructed from different episodes with circus characters, such as the town’s clown, the beautiful lady next door and many others, all recalling past events through their circus performances.

The main objective of the Nebbia circus is to make audiences feel like family members. The narration by the clowns is used to evoke intimacy with the audience.

The show begins at 8 p.m. on weekdays (except Mondays) and 2 and 7 p.m. on weekends.

Tickets range from 30,000 won to 100,000 won.

LG ART CENTER

July 10 to Aug. 3: “Gambler.” The successful European musical that first appeared in Korea in 1999 is back on stage here for the first time in three years.

The musical, written by Eric Woolfson of “Alan Parsons Project” fame, was adapted from Tchaikovsky’s opera, “The Queen of Spades.”

Accordingly, Alan Parsons Project songs such as “Time,” “Eye in the Sky,” “Limelight” and “Games People Play” are featured in the musical. But aside from its catchy songs, the musical has an interesting plot based on the gambling underworld with themes of money, fame and love that should excite theatergoers.

Experienced Korean musical actors Heo Jun-ho and Jeon Soo-kyung headline the performance.

The show is staged at 8 p.m. on weekdays (except Mondays) and 3 and 7:30 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

Thursday to Friday: “2008 Reader’s Poll Concert.” The best Korean jazz musicians for 2008, as voted on in a poll by readers of Jazz People magazine and subscribers of the Bugs music Web site, will perform together on stage at this concert.

Compared to official awards in which professionals and music critics are in charge of judging, the Reader’s Poll Concert is significant as it serves as a barometer of who jazz lovers are most interested in.

Voting was conducted from February to April of this year. The seven winners were: Song Young-ju, piano; Seo Young-do, bass; Oh Jong-dae, drums; Jung Jae-yeol, guitar; Lee Jung-sik, saxophone; Woong San, vocals and Lee Ban-keun.

The concert starts at 8 p.m. on Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Tickets cost 50,000 won for all seats.

SEOUL ART CENTER

July 1: “George Winston Winter Concert.” American pianist George Winston will perform his Winter Concert this summer in Korea.

Winston is currently on a world tour in which he switches between two separate concerts known as Summer and Winter. In Korea, he will present the latter.

The Winter program features songs from his popular “December” album such as “Thanksgiving,” “Autumn” and “Forest.” Also scheduled are songs from the 2006 Hurricane Katrina fundraising album, including “Gulf Coast Blues and Impressions: A Hurricane Relief Benefit.”

The concert will also showcase Winston’s renowned skills as he plays a diverse range of musical genres, from traditional Irish songs to rhythm and blues, soul and rock.

This will be his first concert in Korea since 2005.Tickets range from 30,000 won to 130,000 won.

OLYMPIC PARK

July 4 to 5: “Jaurim Concert ? Canival Amour.” Korean rock band Jaurim is holding a comeback concert to celebrate the release of its seventh album, “Ruby Sapphire Diamond,” which was released earlier this month.

After two years out of the spotlight, vocalist Kim Yun-a, guitarist Lee Sun-gyu, bassist Kim Jin-man and drummer Gu Tae-hoon regrouped to make an album with a fresh new sound. In the album, the cheerful style of Jaurim is mixed with powerful lyrics that reflect the personal lives of each member. “Carnival Amour” is a lively song that makes people feel like dancing, yet guitarist Lee Sun-gyu described this track as the saddest on the album. It underscores the hidden pain behind the songs and their lyrics.

The concert will be held at the Tennis Stadium at Olympic Park where the group performed in 2002. The concert begins at 8:30 p.m.

Tickets range from 55,000 won to 77,000 won.

OUTDOOR CLUB FESTIVAL, Hangang Park

Friday to Saturday: The Korean Club Culture Association hosts the Next Floor 2008 Annual Outdoor Club Music Festival this weekend at the Han River.

The festival aims to promote Korean club culture, taking it from Hongdae-area clubs to mainstream audiences. The intent is to exhibit the music and its culture as fun and artistically expressive.

The lineup includes internationally popular musicians and local artists such as “Infected Mushroom” from Israel, “Infusion” from Australia, “Hybrid” from the United Kingdom, “Kyoyo Jazz Massive” from Japan, “Max Graham” from Canada and Korean artists “No Brain,” “Leessang,” “Super Kidd” and “DJ Sunshine.”

The festival, also known as the Urban Music Resort in Mid Summer, will take place at the Nanji area of Hangang Park and is timed to take advantage of the summer weather.

There will be shuttle buses running every 20 minutes from the Hongdae area. Bus runs are scheduled from one hour before the festival starts until 30 minutes after the last performance.

Tickets range from 20,000 won to 40,000 won and can be purchased on the day of the show at the venue.

The festival begins at 5 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday and will run until 5 a.m.
