Sweeten your day with a Good Ovening cupcake

I have faith in the aesthetics of a dessert. Although I welcome everything that contains sugar and caffeine, I do believe that what’s pretty to my eyes actually tastes sweeter.

My visit to Good Ovening made my whole week cheerful. Good Ovening’s owner, Kim Sin-ae, used to bake gorgeous looking cupcakes for cafes on Garuso-gil in Sinsa-dong, southern Seoul, and now she’s opened her own cafe in the same district.

The cafe is in the basement of a small building on one of Seoul’s less crowded streets. There are only five seats available but the aroma is enticing enough.

The cafe’s focal point is definitely the glass case displaying sumptuous cupcakes. While an Americano is the only drink served, Kim offered a companion of mine a cup of Japanese green tea because she isn’t a coffee drinker. My coffee was mild but comforting, and we picked three cupcakes to sample, each one 4,500 won ($2.87): Funky Berry, Chocolate Cloud and Peanut Butter Pumpkin.

Funky Berry had a dense base made of fresh strawberry cake topped with raspberry buttercream. A blueberry was added on top, adding that extra dimension for my roving eye. The frosting was exactly the way I like it. The berry taste added freshness to the thick cream on top.

Chocolate Cloud was all about chocolate. The cake was moist and rich, while the chocolate cream on top melted in my mouth. Coconut powder was sprinkled on top, adding a perfect finishing touch.

Peanut Butter Pumpkin is a small cake made with pumpkin and topped with freshly whipped cream mixed with peanut butter. A marshmallow was placed on top.

I preferred the sugary buttercream frosting more than the whipped cream topping, but Kim said visitors who are not sugar-addicts prefer the whipped cream frosting.

Good Ovening serves up about 12 different kinds of cupcakes every day, including classics such as Vanilla (vanilla cake with vanilla cream), Red Velvet (cocoa cake with cream cheese buttercream), English Tea Party (tea cake with Earl Grey tea cream) and Espresso (vanilla cake topped with whipped cream with espresso added).

But Kim also offers her own selections of the day, too.

From now on, I know what I need when I feel down and out: A small cupcake from Good Ovening will be an instant cure. Next time, I’ll go for “Mint Condition.”
