Underperforming universities to go

The Education Ministry said last Friday that it will either close or merge some private universities that are experiencing student enrollment shortages and a deteriorating financial status, starting in November.

“A number of private universities has stalled due to financial troubles and fewer than expected enrollments. From 2012, in particular, the number of students entering universities is expected to shrink sharply, due to the decrease in population resulting from the lower birth rate,” said Choi Soo-tae, the Education Ministry official in charge of advanced education policies.
