Hiddink turns down offer from North Korean team

FOOTBALL

Dec 16,2009
Former South Korean national football team manager Guus Hiddink, 63, reportedly turned down an offer to manage the North Korean national team at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Hiddink recently failed to qualify Russia for the World Cup by losing out to Slovenia in the regional qualifier playoffs, a major disappointment.

The coach had stated he would refuse all offers to manage a team in the World Cup following the loss to Slovenia.

A Dutch television show, “Voetbal International,” reported that Hiddink said he turned down the offer from North Korea out of “respect for the Russian Football Federation.”

The former Dutch national team manager has also managed the South Korean and Australian national teams at the World Cup in the past.
