Pohang sign Seol Ki-hyeon

The Pohang Steelers have signed Seol Ki-hyeon to a one-year deal for an undisclosed amount, the team announced yesterday afternoon.

“I will showcase the skills I’ve picked up in Europe over the years for our fans,” Seol was quoted as saying on the team Web site. “Having watched the Steelers in the AFC Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup last year, I thought Pohang was one of those rare K-League teams with a lot of merit.”

Seol is expected to arrive in Korea today at 4 p.m., when he will hold a press conference. He will join Pohang’s winter training camp after an official event with the team on Wednesday.

The Steelers’ decision to sign Seol, the former Fulham and Korean national team forward, follows their acquisition of Brazilian forward Mota last week.

The Steelers failed to re-sign Brazilian forward Denilson. The team also released the disgruntled Macedonian forward Stevica Ristic. Both players signed with Uzbek club Bunyodkor last week.

Seol has played his entire professional career in Europe and will make his K-League debut in the upcoming season. He played for Royal Antwerp of the Belgian League and went on to play for Anderlecht, the Wolverhampton Wanderers, Reading and Fulham.

Having scored 19 goals in 83 international matches for the Korean national team, Seol is best remembered for scoring the equalizer in the round of 16 matchup against Italy in the 2002 World Cup.
