KBO aims for fan involvement

The Korea Baseball Organization is hoping to set another attendance record this year by getting fans more involved as it prepares to start the 2010 season.

To drum up interest, the organization will host 400 baseball fans at its media day event on March 20 in the grand ballroom of the Grand Intercontinental Hotel in Samseong-dong, southern Seoul.

If the large turnouts at spring preseason games are any indication - including the 18,000 fans who filed into Jamsil Stadium for the March 14 match between the Doosan Bears and LG Twins - the league is on the right track in boosting overall attendance. The KBO is hoping to draw 6.5 million fans to games this season, an increase from the record-setting 5.9 million fans the league lured last year.

The annual media day event, in which managers and players from the eight KBO teams field questions from sportswriters, has been in existence for five years. Dubbed “Let’s Play Ball with Fans,” this year’s event marks the first time fans are invited. The event will be broadcast live on SBS Sports and the Korean Web portal Naver.

The KBO will also allow a select number of fans to interview players and managers of their choice. All fans will be given the opportunity to interact with and receive autographs from the players in attendance at 1 p.m. The official event starts at 2 p.m.

In addition to the managers, three players from each team will be on hand: a pitcher, positional player and a rookie. Some of the notable names scheduled to attend include Yoon Seok-min of the Kia Tigers, Kim Jae-hyeon of the SK Wyverns and Lee Dae-ho of the Lotte Giants.

Those interested in attending can register for a chance to participate at www.koreabaseball.com starting at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
