The Korea Electric Power Corporation has announced its 2020 New Vision to become a global top five utility for green energy while reaching 85 trillion won in sales - 27 trillion won of it overseas - by 2020.

To achieve this, KEPCO is promoting smart grids and seeking ways to create profit through green growth. A smart grid connects IT technology to the power grid and enables customers and the supplier to exchange information in real time. It allows customers to use electricity when it’s cheapest.

For the producer, too, smart grids check usage in real time and manage supply flexibly. During hours when electricity usage is low, the company does not have to maintain maximum distribution, or it can store energy and use it when energy consumption is high. It is also possible to prevent overloads in the power grid. A smart grid manages everything that has electricity flowing within it, giving all parties maximum control over electricity use. For example, it lets you run your laundry machine at night instead of during peak afternoon hours.

KEPCO is bringing digital technology to electrical distribution through its smart grid business, raising energy efficiency and profit. By reducing waste, the system also helps reduce CO2 emissions. KEPCO plans to develop, prove and finally export smart grid technology to the benefit both of consumers and power distributors worldwide.

Currently KEPCO is constructing a smart grid complex in the northeastern part of Jeju Island, to provide electricity to 6,000 houses. The project is scheduled for completion by 2013.
