Olympic medalists Lee and Kwak get reduced suspensions

[SPORTS BRIEFS] SHORT-TRACK SPEED SKATING

May 20,2010
The suspensions of 2010 Vancouver Olympics medalists Lee Jung-soo and Kwak Yoon-gy were reduced to one year yesterday, winning an appeal they filed less than a week ago.

The Korea Skating Union had initially handed the two skaters suspensions of three years earlier this month for their role in manipulating national team rosters.

The two skaters appealed the ruling on May 14.

National team head coach Kim Ki-hoon and coach Chun Jae-mok, who were also recently sentenced to three-year bans, did not receive reduced sentences.

Lee was found to have been forcefully left off the national team roster for the World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria in late March.

Lee came clean with his version of the story and Kwak countered Lee’s statements, leading to a joint investigation by the Korea Olympic Committee and the KSU.

The initial ruling by the KOC on April 22 suggested a minimum suspension of a year for both skaters.
