S. Korea loses 0-1 to Spain in World Cup tune-up

South Korea's national football team lost 0-1 against Spain on Thursday in its final warm-up match ahead of the World Cup finals.

In the friendly held at the Tivoli-Neu Stadium in Innsbruck, the two teams failed to score throughout most of the match, but Spanish midfielder
Jesus Navas brought his team the victory goal in the 86th minute.

Supported by loud fans, South Korea pulled off strong attacks but failed to turn them into goals. In the 13th minute, Kim Jung-woo launched a long-range shot that nearly scored.

Ki Sung-yueng drilled a close shot in the 67th minute, but teammate Park Chu-young accidentally headed the ball away.

Korean captain and Manchester United midfielder Park Ji-sung missed the game over a slight ache in his right thigh.

In the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup, South Korea defeated the current FIFA-ranked No. 2 Spain on spot kicks in the quarterfinal match. But officially it was recorded as a draw.

Thursday's exhibition was the first match for South Korea after it fixed its final 23-man World Cup roster, and was intended as a test of the players' preparedness against Argentina, which they will face in the group competition along with Greece and Nigeria.

"The match against Spain gave us a good experience. Mostly on the defense, we sought for a counteroffensive but failed to produce a chance," coach Huh Jung-moo said at a post-game news conference, adding he was satisfied with his players' performance despite the loss.

'캡틴' 박지성(맨체스터 유나이티드)이 가벼운 허벅지 통증으로 결장한 가운데 허정무 감독은 강팀에 대비해 허리진을 강화한 4-2-3-1 전술로 '무적함대' 스페인과 맞섰다.

박주영(모나코)을 원톱으로 좌우 날개에 염기훈(수원)과 이청용(볼턴)이 자리 잡은 대표팀은 김재성(포항)을 공격형 미드필더로 세우고 기성용(셀틱)-김정우(광주상무)를 중앙 미드필더로 배치했다.

박지성을 대신해 주장 완장을 찬 이영표(알 힐랄)와 이정수(가시마), 조용형(제주), 오범석(울산)이 포백(4-back)을 맡았고, '맏형' 이운재(수원)가 골키퍼 장갑을 끼었다.

이에 맞서는 스페인은 195㎝의 장신 공격수 페르난도 요렌테(빌바오)를 원톱으로 '특급 미드필더 콤비' 안드레스 이니에스타(바르셀로나)와 세스크 파브레가스(아스널)가 중원을 맡는 정예멤버로 나섰다.
