Football teams get good results from new additions

Two K-League teams that made deals ahead of last week’s trade deadline are already seeing their investments in new players pay dividends.

Both the Suwon Bluewings and FC Seoul benefitted over the weekend from the strong play of their trade-deadline acquisitions.

Suwon pulled off a 2-0 win over Sangmu Phoenix with the help of its newest addition, central defender Hwang Jae-won.

Hwang, who Suwon acquired from the Pohang Steelers prior to last Wednesday’s trade deadline, scored the opening goal off a header from Yeom Ki-hoon’s corner kick two minutes into the match. Having broken into the K-League in 2004 with Pohang, Hwang scored a total of six goals in 87 appearances for the Steelers before joining Suwon on July 26.

Shin Young-rok - another new acquisition for Suwon - secured the win by connecting on a header from Baek Ji-hoon in the 52nd minute. Shin started his career with Suwon in 2003 and signed with Bursaspor of the Turkish Super Lig in 2008 before recently returning to Suwon. Marcio Diogo, who is on loan from the Brazilian club Cruzeiro, also got playing time in the game.

“I decided to plug talented players in the starting lineup,” said Suwon manager Yoon Sung-ho in a post-match interview. “They lived up to my expectations and played a fine game. Marcio played a superb game, his performance was better than what I had expected.”

FC Seoul was able to leap from third overall to the top of the league standings with a 2-0 win over Jeju United at Seoul World Cup Stadium. Dejan Damjanovic scored both goals to extend FC Seoul’s win streak at home to 10 games while putting an end to Jeju United’s six-game winning streak in the process.

Dejan opened the scoring 15 minutes into the match thanks to a cross from Server Djeparov of Uzbekistan from the right side of the field. He then added another goal in the 82nd minute of the match. The 2008 Asian Football Confederation Player of the Year and Uzbekistan national team member joined FC Seoul last week on loan from the Uzbekistani club Bunyodkor. He made his debut for FC Seoul in the team’s Posco Cup quarterfinals win against the Suwon Bluewings last Wednesday.

“FC Seoul is playing a team-oriented game, and Djeparov is fitting in well,” said FC Seoul manager Nelo Vingada.

Meanwhile, new national football team manager Cho Kwang-rae led Gyeongnam FC to a 3-2 win over Incheon United in his final game with the club. Cho will make his national team managerial debut at the Aug. 11 international friendly against Nigeria at Seoul World Cup Stadium.
