Patricia Field

Famous fashion designer and stylist Patricia Field has linked up with the European luxury brand MCM to create a new line of bags destined to become the talk of the town.

She recently sat down for an interview to talk about her idea of fashion and her collaboration with MCM.

Q. What is your idea of fashion?

A. Whether you are rich or not, you can get something stylish for your wardrobe. To do this you must know whether green looks good on you or purple looks good on you. This is style. You don’t need money to choose a color. Sometimes you can look more fashionable than your budget suggests. If you think calmly for a while, you can look cool without going into debt. You must know yourself to create your own fashion. Just like other arts, fashion reflects the trends of the time and the culture. If you worry about what to wear, then you must look inside yourself first. If you are happy, what you feel on the inside must show on the outside as well.

What was the difference between working with MCM and your previous work as a stylist?

Nothing was very different. The most important thing for me is how well I know the person that I am styling. So whether the person is a celebrity or just a general customer, I spend a lot of time with the client trying to understand the person. For example, before styling Meryl Streep in “The Devil Wears Prada,” I visited her home and developed an understanding of her lifestyle. After she gained confidence in me, I was able to provide her the perfect styling. Stylists need to get the faith of their clients. Once I gain that trust, clients will be able to wear the style that I propose.

What image of women did you attempt to portray in the MCM Collaboration line?

Women carrying bags from the MCM collection by Patricia Field must be full of confidence and love fashionable but practical bags. This is the image I conjured up in my mind when designing the bags. I was thinking of modern women who are exhausted by the heavy, fancy bags that focus on design rather than practicality. The bags that I have designed are practical in many ways, like the “Reversible Shopper” - a large bag with a different color on the inside and outside and a pouch that you can put phones and keys in. The women who want these kinds of products are confident, intelligent and rational city-dwellers. The colors that I have chosen - brown, khaki green and black - blend well with any color of clothes.
