Prison for actor caught with drugs

Actor Kim Sung-min was sentenced to two years and six months in prison and was fined 904,500 won ($806) on charges of smoking marijuana.

The ruling was handed down yesterday by the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office and is a reduction of Kim’s original sentence, which was four years in prison plus a fine.

In explaining its decision, the court said: “Kim has admitted to all charges and we have received his letters of apology and petitions from his acquaintances. We took these into account with the ruling.”Kim has submitted a letter of apology to the court after each of the three hearings thus far.

“The accused in a criminal case usually doesn’t submit letters of apology,” the court added. “This voluntary action shows Kim’s deep regret for the crimes in question.”

Although Kim has not yet decided whether to file an appeal, some expect he will in the coming week.

Kim was charged with smoking marijuana and smuggling methamphetamines from the Philippines in 2008.

‘히로뽕 투입’ 김성민 징역 2년6월형
법원 “직접 밀반입, 죄질 나쁘다”

서울중앙지법 형사합의29부는 24일 해외에서 히로뽕을 밀반입해 투약하고 대마초를 피운 혐의(마약류 관리에 관한 법률 위반)로 구속기소된 탤런트 김성민(37·사진)씨에게 징역 2년6월과 추징금 90만4500원을 선고했다.

재판부는 이날 “김씨가 히로뽕을 단순히 투입만 한 게 아니라 적지 않은 양을 직접 밀반입하고 다른 사람과 함께 나눠 투약하는 등 죄질이 나쁘다”고 판단했다. 그러나 “범행을 모두 자백하고 잘못을 깊이 뉘우치고 있는 점, 주식투자 실패로 인한 스트레스와 우울 장애로 마약을 하게 된 점 등을 감안했다”고 양형 이유를 설명했다.

재판부는 이어 “같은 프로그램(KBS ‘남자의 자격’)에 출연한 동료들과 중국 팬클럽에서 탄원서를 보내왔다”며 ＂연예인의 행동이 사회에 얼마나 큰 영향을 미치는지, 연예인으로서의 압박감이 얼마나 컸는지 알 수 있었다”고 덧붙였다. 김씨에게는 ‘다시는 마약을 하지 않겠다고 한 다짐을 잊지 말라’고 당부했다.
