Footballer Park Ji-sung establishes foundation

Football player Park Ji-sung has set up his own charity foundation to help the development of youth football.

Park announced Monday that he will serve as the executive director of the JS Foundation, named after his own initials.

“Our vision is to help globalize Korean football and to share happiness through the sport,” Park said in a statement. “We will develop and run charity programs that can help us engage in football diplomacy.”

Park, who plays for Manchester United in the English Premier League, recently retired from international play after appearing in 100 games for the national team. Park participated in his first World Cup in 2002 and captained the national team at the 2010 South Africa World Cup and the 2011 Asian Cup.

The first JS Foundation event will be a charity football match in Vietnam on June 15. The game will be called the “Asian Dream Cup” and will feature active and retired football stars from Korea and other Asian countries.

Current Korean national team players, such as Lee Chung-yong of the Bolton Wanderers in England and Ki Sung-yeung of Celtic FC in Scotland, will play in the charity game, as well as retired Japanese footballer Hidetoshi Nakata.

Aside from charity matches, the foundation will provide scholarships to young players and run fund-raising events to help youth football across Asia.

“I’ve thought long and hard about helping football in my country and the rest of Asia,” Park said. “This will be a new start in my football life.”
