These ballerinos have reason to be bashful

Even for the KBS comedy program “Gag Concert,” this is weird: four men come up with new ways to prevent television audiences from seeing the outline of their penises in their in white ballerino tights.

And that’s just what makes this segment so popular. Using water bottles, fans, balloons, hats and anything else around them - including each other’s hands - the audience is left wondering what the foursome will come up with next in the skit called “Balleri-NO.”

The four comic actors, Lee Seung-yun, Yang Sun-il, Park Sung-kwang and Jung Tae-ho, met with the JoongAng Ilbo to talk about their careers and Gag Concert’s most recent success.

“I feel like the people that I meet these days all take a sneak peak at the lower part of my body,” said Lee. “When you think about it, we are wearing all the required clothing to be on national television, but I guess it’s only natural to attract attention to that particular part in these skits.”

Deep down, “Balleri-NO” is about a lot more than slapstick penis jokes. The skit represents the changing roles of the sexes and try to break down the perception that only men look at women in a sexual way.

“When we first came up with this idea, we just burst out laughing. But we held off on it,” Jung said. “We thought the public may find it offensive.”

However, when the idea was pitched to the main producer, Seo Su-min, she wanted to broadcast it right away.

“The reaction was explosive - we had everyone’s undivided attention; we, as in our intimate parts,” Jung said.

Ballet moves were taught by ballerinos from the Korea National Ballet. The full body tights - the same ones that real ballerinos wear - were specially ordered to fit the comedians’ physiques.

“Lee, who is a martial arts fan, took the liberty of getting jockstraps that are usually not for ballerinos, but for martial arts athletes,” said Jung. “We had difficulty at first, because we were never really the dancing types, but we are getting better by the day.”

There had been some concern that the skit would offend ballerinos.

“The ballerinos we talked to said that when they first wore the tights, they were embarrassed to stand on stage, too. They actually sympathized with our skit and enjoyed it,” said Jung.

“Some male viewers even said that they wanted to learn ballet because of us,” he added.

But Park revealed that he suffered more than the others.

“I had a cute, friendly image that allowed me to gather a lot of young fans. After this skit, I lost most of them because they thought I looked gross.”

The show has focused mostly on Park and Jung so far, but they are planning to take it to the next level. Yang will play a character who is the son of nobility, while Lee will play a character who dislikes Park.

The four said they take pride in the fact that the comical elements used in the skit are so primitive that anyone can laugh along with them.

“The fundamentals of our skit are whether to hide or show the [bottom half] of our bodies. Because of this simplicity, we meet more often than other teams to think of items that the audience can’t anticipate,” said Park.

“Our goal is to be able to hide our parts without any sort of preinstalled devices or props. We think that will be the day we make magic,” Park added.

가릴수록 더 야한가 봐요”

KBS2 ‘개그콘서트’(이하 ‘개콘’, 일요일 오후 9시5분)를 보시라. 발레리노 타이즈를 입은 채 온몸을 X자로 꼬며 중요 부위를 가리기에 급급한 그들. 가로 바(bar)가, 동화책이, 풍선이, 모자가 ‘은신 장비’가 된다. 벗어 젖힌 웃통보다, 엉덩이 끝에 걸린 핫팬츠보다, 가리고 숨기는 그 모습이 눈에 띄고 야하다. 게다가 ‘그 부위’에 맞춤한 사이즈의 가리개는 얼마나 많은지, 주변의 부채가, 물통이, 달리 보인다.

　‘개콘’의 새 폭소탄 ‘발레리NO’. 러시아 국립발레단을 배경으로 이승윤(KBS 공채 21기)·박성광·양선일(이상 22기)·정태호(23기) 등 4인방이 등장한다. 기수 막내 정태호가 마이스터 선생, 나머지 셋은 그의 사사를 받으면서 골탕 먹이는 제자들이다. 정태호가 번번히 “어텐션(차렷)!”을 외치며 기본동작을 설파하지만, 제자들은 혹시나 보일까 중요 부위를 가리기 위해 자리 다툼에 혈안이다. 상호 합(동작의 맞춤)과 타이밍이 핵심인데, 가끔 어긋나서 볼록한 앞 부분이 포착되기도(!) 한다.

　“따지고 보면 입을 것 다 입고, 가릴 것 다 가렸거든요. 그런데도 거기에만 눈길이 꽂히는 건 본능 같아요. 수영장에선 비키니 차림이 자연스럽지만 일상에선 눈에 확 띄는 것처럼요.” (이승윤)

　국내 코미디사에서 남성 심볼이 이토록 노골적으로 소재가 된 적이 있을까. 성 역할 변화 풍자(‘남성인권보장위원회’)와 남성 몸의 오락화(‘짐승들’) 등을 넘어서 ‘남성을 훔쳐보는 여성과 그것을 의식하는 남성’이 두드러진다. 몸 개그지만 아이디어가 돋보이는 ‘하이 컨셉트 몸개그’다.

　“첫 아이디어 회의 하고선 우리끼리 미친 듯이 웃었죠. 그래놓고 ‘다음에 하자’고 했어요. 사회정서상 이르지 않을까 했거든요. 그런데 여자 PD(서수민)도 좋다고 하기에 올렸는데 반응이 엄청난 거예요. 공개 녹화 때요? 집중도 장난 아니에요. 다들 눈동자가 거기만 따라 움직여요.”(정태호)

　전신 타이즈는 남성용 발레 연습복을 주문한 것이다. 격투기 매니어 이승윤이 가리개를 공수해왔다. “발레리노들이 쓰는 것과는 좀 다른, 격투기용”이라고 했다. “어텐션(차렷)” 등 용어와 기본 동작은 모두 국립 발레단 출신 현역 발레리노에게 배웠다. “넷 다 몸치라서 처음엔 타박 들었는데 갈수록 늘고 있다”(정태호)고 한다.

　정태호가 선생 역할을 맡은 건 깐깐한 캐릭터뿐 아니라 다른 이유도 있다. “나머지 셋이 키가 비슷해요. 덕분에 서로 손을 뻗어 가려주거나 바 앞에서 취하는 동작이 딱딱 맞아떨어져요.”(양선일)

　발레리노 희화화 우려도 있다. “그분들도 처음엔 딱 붙는 옷 입고 무대 서기 민망했대요. 그랬던 게 떠올라 오히려 재미있게 본다고 하더라고요. 이 코너를 보고 ‘발레 배우고 싶다’는 사람들도 늘었대요.”(정태호) 이미지의 타격(?)을 받은 쪽은 박성광. “제가 귀여운 이미지였잖아요. 근데 10대 팬들이 징그럽다며 다 떨어져 나갔어요.”(웃음)

　지금까진 정태호와 박성광 위주지만 앞으론 각자 캐릭터를 살려서 스토리를 보여줄 작정이다. 예컨대 양선일은 귀족 가문 출신이고 승윤은 성광 선배를 미워한다는 설정 등이다.

　“워낙 원초적인 개그라 아이부터 70대 어르신까지 다 이해하고 웃는다”는 게 이들의 자랑. “보이느냐 숨기느냐 간단한 원리지만 관객이 예기치 않는 아이디어로 가려야 하기 때문에 그 어떤 코너보다 회의를 많이 한다”고 입을 모았다. “과제요? 무대에 정말 아~무 소품이나 장치가 없는데 가릴 수 있는가. 그게 실현되면 정말 마술 같을 거예요.”
