‘My Princess’ to be a musical

The popular MBC drama, “My Princess,” will soon become a musical directed by Lee Ji-na and with music from songwriter Kim Hyung-suk. Lee has been the force behind popular Korean productions of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” “Grease,” “Daejanggeum” and “The Phantom of the Opera.”

Curtain Call, the musical’s production company, said through a press release on Monday that they are currently in the process of fleshing out the script and will start casting in June, with performances to begin in March 2012.

“My Princess,” is a romantic comedy about a high-spirited college student who becomes the princess of a Korean kingdom. The series features stars like Song Seung-hun and Kim Tae-hee.

송승헌·김태희의 ‘마이 프린세스’ 뮤지컬로 제작

송승헌·김태희 주연의 MBC 수목극 ‘마이 프린세스’가 뮤지컬로 재탄생한다. 제작사 커튼콜 제작단은 21일 “드라마 인기에 힘입어 뮤지컬화가 전격 결정됐다”며 “대한민국 황실 재건이라는 독특한 소재가 완성도 있는 음악과 어우러져 새로운 뮤지컬로 탄생하게 될 것”이라고 밝혔다.

이어 “현재 대본작업이 진행 중이며 오는 6월 대대적인 오디션을 통해 주연배우들을 선발할 예정”이라며 “준비가 끝나는 내년 3월 총 80회 예정으로 관객들을 만나게 된다”고 덧붙였다.

뮤지컬 ‘마이 프린세스’는 ‘뮤지컬계 미다스 손’이라 불리는 이지나 감독이 연출자로, 인기 작곡가 김형석이 음악감독으로 활약할 예정이다. 이지나 감독은 ‘헤드윅’, ‘그리스’, ‘대장금’, ‘오페라의 유령’ 등 인기 뮤지컬을 연출했고, 작곡가 김형석은 신승훈, 성시경, 김조한 등 인기가수들의 노래를 작곡했다.

최근 많은 드라마와 영화들이 뮤지컬로 재탄생되며 인기를 끌고 있는 가운데 뮤지컬 ‘마이 프린세스’ 역시 드라마의 인기를 이어갈 수 있을지 주목된다.
