Kim Yu-na retains top spot in world ranking

Figure skater Kim Yu-na remained at the top of the world standings, despite not having competed for the past 12 months.

According to the International Skating Union (ISU), Kim - the 2010 Vancouver Olympic gold medalist and a national hero in Korea - kept her No. 1 spot for the 14th straight month with 4,024 points.

Akiko Suzuki of Japan was second at 4,010 points, followed by Carolina Kostner of Italy with 3,875 points.

The ISU awards points to skaters based on their performances in ISU-sanctioned events, including the Winter Olympics, world championships, European championships, Grand Prix series and Four Continents Championships, which are open to non-European competitors.
