Hong may return for AFC qualifier

Footballer Hong Jung-ho, currently three games into a five-game K-League suspension, is expected to be in Jeju United’s starting lineup tonight when it takes on Japanese club Gamba Osaka in a crucial Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League group E qualifier in Seogwipo, Jeju Island.

The 22-year-old was slapped with the suspension after his team’s season opening 2-1 victory on March 6 against Busan I’Park. He wa seen flashing an obscene hand gesture to Busan fans taking in the game.

The defender’s action was seen by an assistant referee, who immediately told the main referee to give him a red card. After the incident, Jeju United handed down its own punishment on Hong, fining him 5 million won ($4,434).

The K-League, however, reviewed the incident and added to his punishment, fining him another 3 million won and suspending him for five games.

Hong was also ordered to complete 30 hours of community service.

He was the first football player to be disciplined this season, which started on March 6.

But that was not the end of it for Hong.

He was left off the Korean national football team for its friendly against Honduras, when national team head coach Cho Kwang-rae said Hong was dropped from the roster for failing to meet the characteristics of a national team player that respects fans.

Hong’s five game suspension will bar him from K-League play until April 23.

Hong has said the suspension has given him time to reflect on his action and get in better shape.

“It [the punishment] was really a benefit for me,” Hong told Ilgan Sports. “It was a good opportunity for me to look back at myself.”

Hong said that since the incident, he has felt guilt for being unable to help the team.

“I could not see coaches or teammates’ faces,” Hong said.

“But fortunately people helped me a lot and I was able to focus on training,” he added.

Hong said he is excited to play against the Japanese side and help Jeju reach the round of 16 .

“If there’s no big issue, I will be playing against Gamba Osaka. This game is very important to us,” Hong said. “We must collect a win on our home field to advance to the next round.”

If Hong plays tonight, his role will be to contain fellow Korean Lee Keun-ho, who has been on a torrid place of late. The 26-year-old attacking midfielder has two goals and two assists in AFC Champions League play so far this year.

Lee also notched a goal in the friendly against Honduras on March 25.

“I first met Lee on the national team last year,” Hong said.

“He is now in good form along side Adriano and Yasuhito Endo, but I believe our defensive line can contain their offense.”

‘부담 백배’ 홍정호, ‘근호형은 내가 막는다’

몸이 근질거렸다. 20일간 훈련만 해온 홍정호(22·제주)가 그라운드에 선다. 무대는 5일 오후 7시 반 서귀포월드컵경기장에서 열리는 감바 오사카(일본)와 AFC(아시아축구연맹) 챔피언스리그 E조 조별리그 3차전이다.

홍정호는 지난달 6일 부산 아이파크와 K-리그 개막전에서 원정팀 팬에 불미스러운 손동작을 범해 5경기 출장정지 처분을 받았다. 지난달 말 평가전을 치른 성인대표팀과 올림픽대표팀도 자숙하라는 차원에서 선발하지 않았다. 징계가 없었다면 지난 20일간 3경기에 나섰을 홍정호였다.

K-리그 징계는 4월 23일에야 풀린다. 그 사이 그가 뛸 수 있는 경기는 챔피언스리그가 유일하다. 홍정호는 "정말 약이 됐다. 나 자신을 둘러볼 기회였다. 이번 경기는 정말 중요하다. 감바 오사카는 우리 조 최강팀이다. 홈에서 반드시 이겨야 16강 진출을 바라볼 수 있다"고 말했다.

그를 가장 괴롭힌 건 죄책감이었다. K-리그와 챔피언스리그를 병행하는 빡빡한 일정이 이어지는 상황에서 전혀 팀에 도움이 될 수 없었다. 홍정호는 "감독님과 동료를 볼 면목이 없었다. 다행히 주위에서 많이 도와줘 훈련에 집중할 수 있었다"고 했다. 박경훈 제주 감독은 "(홍)정호가 처음에는 너무 기가 죽어 있었다. 이제야 얼굴에 웃음기가 돌아왔다"고 안도했다.

팀에 빚을 갚겠다고 너무 덤볐을까. 홍정호는 3일 자체 연습경기에서 담이 걸려 경기 도중 교체됐다. 오후부터 찾아온 몸살로 초저녁부터 잠자리에 들어야 했다. 그는 "너무 신경을 썼나보다. 잘 해야겠다는 생각이 너무 앞섰다. 하지만 큰 문제가 없는 한 감바 오사카와 경기에는 무조건 뛸 것"이라고 의욕을 보였다. 다행히도 하룻밤 휴식으로 몸살기를 날려보냈다. 홍정호는 4일 오전 봉사활동을 시작으로 정식 스케줄을 소화했다.

수비수인 홍정호에게 감바 오사카의 공격수 이근호(26)는 무척 신경쓰이는 존재다. 이근호는 올 시즌 4경기(A매치 포함)에서 3골 3도움을 기록 중이다. 챔피언스리그 2경기에서 2골 2도움, J-리그 개막전에서 1도움, 그리고 지난 달 25일 온두라스와 평가전에서 1골을 기록하며 확실히 부활을 알렸다.

홍정호는 "(지난해 8월) 대표팀 소집 때 (이)근호 형을 처음 봤다. 근호 형과 친한 (박)주영이 형이 다리가 돼 얘기를 나눈 적이 있다. 요즘 상승세가 대단하다. 감바 오사카의 비디오를 보니 근호 형과 아드리아노, 그리고 엔도가 공격의 중심이다. 우리 수비라인이 반드시 막아내겠다"고 밝혔다.
