Two basketball greats clash as rivals in KBL final

Head coaches Hur Jae and Kang Dong-hee were known for their creative style of play when they were teammates in college basketball and the KBL in the 1980s and 1990s.

While Kang was celebrated for his natural passing abilities, Hur is remembered for his long-range shooting.

The two were a force as amateurs when they played together at Chung-Ang University and with the Busan Kia Motors - which won seven titles during their tenure.

Both were victorious one more time in their first season as pros, playing for the Busan Kia Enterprise in 1997.

But this Saturday, the two basketball greats will meet as rivals head coaches when they square off for the Korean Basketball League title.

When Hur’s KCC Egis faces Kang’s Dongbu Promy this weekend, it will be the first time the two men will meet in the KBL finals as coaches.

Kang hopes to tap into his past coaching success against his old teammate. The 41-year-old earned his first win as head coach when his Dongbu Promy topped Hur’s team 89-79 in September 2009.

“Throughout the season, I always [thought about] meeting Hur in the finals,” Kang told Ilgan Sports. “When I heard his team reached the finals, I called him right away and said ‘let’s fight.’”

Hur acknowledges that facing his old friend is somewhat bittersweet, but the 42-year-old said they are meeting at a very important stage in their careers.

“Off the court, we are like brothers. On the court, we have to compete,” Hur said to Ilgan Sports. “I want to give the fans an intense and exciting show.”

Basketball pundits predict that the best-of-seven series between the Egis and Promy will be a battle between an offensive-minded team and a defensive one.

The Egis has a size advantage in the low post with Ha Seung-jin, the former Portland Trailblazer who tops out at 221 centimeters (7 feet, 3 inches) and is the tallest player in the KBL. But the Promy has weapons of its own.

Dongbu is known for its zone defense and dominates when low-post studs Kim Joo-sung and Yoon Ho-young are active in the paint, blocking, grabbing rebounds and fighting for possession.

During the regular season, Hur’s Egis dominated Kang’s Promy by a margin of five games to one.

However, Kang believes he can collect four victories against his old friend in this best-of-seven opponent-goes-home, winner-gets-glory final series.

“KCC is a difficult opponent, but this is a seven game series,” Kang said. “It is hard to find their weaknesses, but we will stick to our defense.”

Egis’ Ha agrees with his coach’s analysis that it won’t be an easy series.

“We led them five-one in the regular season, but we never won any of the games easily,” Ha noted.

“There will not be a one-sided game.”

"챔프전 동안 인연 끊어야지."

'절친' 허재(46) 전주 KCC 감독과 강동희(45) 원주 동부 감독이 16일부터 시작되는 프로농구 챔피언결정전에서 만났다. 허 감독과 강 감독은 각각 1984년과 86년 중앙대에 입학한 이후 97년 기아자동차 시절까지 함께 뛰었다. 이제 눈빛만 봐도 무슨 생각을 하는지 아는 관계가 됐다. 13일 서울 프로농구연맹(KBL) 센터에서 열린 챔피언결정전 미디어데이에서도 두 감독은 친분을 과시했다. 허 감독은 "강 감독이 챔프전 끝날 때까지 인연을 끊자고 했다. (챔프전 끝나고) 술 한잔하면 되니까 그렇게 하겠다"며 껄껄 웃었다. 강 감독도 "정을 끊어야 경기에 집중할 수 있다. 경기를 하다 보면 날카로운 부분이 있기 때문에 당분간 허 감독과 식사 자리를 하지 않겠다"고 맞불을 놨다.

▶허재 KCC 감독

-챔피언 결정전에 올라온 소감은.

"3년 째다. 올해는 공교롭게도 제일 친한 (강)동희와 맞붙게 됐다. 친한 동생과 챔프전을 치르게 돼 부담이다. 하지만 형·동생 사이를 떠나서 경기만큼은 최선을 다해 우승하겠다."

-KCC가 앞선다는 의견이 지배적이다.

"정규리그 성적을 보고 예측한 것 같다. 정규리그를 무시할 순 없지만 챔프전은 양팀이 얼마만큼 정신력과 집중력을 가지고 경기를 풀어나가느냐에 따라 승패가 갈린다. 전술에서 승부가 결정될 것 같다."

-선수 시절부터 강 감독보다 항상 앞서 나갔다.

"강 감독이 이기고 싶은 건 당연한 것이다. 하지만 나도 지고 싶은 생각은 전혀 없다. 강 감독이 무슨 수를 쓸지는 모르겠지만 반드시 이기겠다."

-플레이오프가 시작되면서 경기 중 화를 내는 부분이 줄어들었다.

"선수들에게 화를 내면 사기가 떨어지고 팀 분위기가 나빠지는 것 같아 플레이오프부터 자제했다. 칭찬하고 박수를 보내니 선수들이 자신감이 붙더라. 언제 다시 화를 낼지는 모르겠지만 계속해서 선수들을 칭찬하겠다."

-어느 부분에서 승부가 갈릴 것이라고 생각하나.

"하승진이 몇 분이나 벤치에 앉아 있느냐가 중요하다. 최대한 코트에 오래 남아 뛰는 게 팀에 도움이 되기 때문이다. 또 시작(1차전)을 잘하는 팀이 유리하게 흘러갈 것이다."

▶강동희 동부 감독

-첫 챔프전 진출이다.

"감독이 된 이후 처음 치르는 챔프전이다. 떨리고 기대된다. 선수들에게 '끝까지 달려보자'고 말했다. 허 감독님과 친한 관계지만 이번만큼은 반드시 뛰어 넘고 싶다."

-항상 허 감독보다 뒤처졌다.

"허재 형에게 이긴 기억이 없다. 이번에 좋은 기회가 왔다고 생각한다. 언제 다시 올지 모르는 기회를 꼭 살려 우승하겠다."

-동부가 패할 거라는 예상이 많다.

"KCC가 정규리그 때보다 강해진 건 사실이다. 우리는 수비를 전문으로 하는 팀이다. KCC의 공격을 어떻게 막느냐에 따라 경기가 달라질 것이다. 외곽슛이 터진다면 넘지 못할 산은 아니라고 본다."

-KCC의 어떤 부분을 막을 것인가.

"KCC의 공격 루트가 다양하기 때문에 고민이 많다. 플레이오프 때 90~105점 정도 올렸기 때문에 고민이 많다. 하승진이 잠깐 벤치로 물러났을 때가 기회라고 본다. 그 짧은 시간에 어떻게 공격을 하느냐가 승부처라고 생각한다. 하승진의 체력을 떨어뜨리는 전술을 구상할 것이다."

-경기 전날 항상 만나 식사를 한다고 들었다. 이번에는 어떻게 할 것인가.

"당분간 인연을 끊고 살겠다. 그래야 경기에 집중할 수 있다. 경기를 하다 보면 서로 날카로워질 수가 있다. 당분간은 모든 걸 접고 경기에만 집중하겠다."
