Royal wedding will draw thousands from around world

NEW YORK - Diane Morton will soon be flying from Florida, where she lives, to London, to be in the city when the royal wedding takes place.

She hasn’t researched the procession route and she may or may not try to stake out a spot to catch a glimpse of the carriage carrying Prince William and his bride Kate Middleton. But she just wants to be in London when it happens.

“Even if we don’t see anything, it’s OK just to be there and be part of the hoopla,’’ said Morton, 67, of Parkland, Florida, who will be traveling with her partner, Donald Ammons. “We enjoy London. It’s a fun place to be, and we have a couple of good friends there. If we are lucky, maybe we’ll get a glimpse of Kate in the carriage afterwards.’’

Morton is one of 600,000 additional people who are expected to be in London when the royal wedding takes place on April 29, according to estimates from London + Partners, the city’s official tourism body.

Those determined to wake up early and stand for hours along the procession route in hopes of seeing the royals in person may get their wish but tourism experts say there are many other ways to experience the event, from street parties to watching it on giant screens across the city to toasting the happy couple in a pub.

“The atmosphere in the city is going to be a lot of fun,’’ said Dinah Hatch, author of a downloadable ebook, “Frommer’s The Royal Wedding,’’ just out from the travel guidebook company. “There will be a lot of pubbing and drinking and even if you don’t catch sight of Kate and Will, it’ll be fun. Let’s just hope it doesn’t rain.’’

“We love a good party,’’ agreed Karen Clarkson, Visit Britain’s vice president for North America, “and there will be informal street parties happening all over London and around the U.K.’’

Officials have confirmed that giant screens at Hyde Park and Trafalgar Square will show live TV coverage of the event.

Clarkson said Visit Britain expects screens will be put up at other locations as well “where people can watch it with a crowd, enjoy the atmosphere and experience the procession.’’

The route for the procession between Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey, where the couple will wed, runs through St. James’s Park, along The Mall, down Horse Guards Avenue, past the Horse Guards Parade and along Whitehall to Parliament Square.

Those determined to stake out a spot should be prepared for hours of waiting.

“The key is to actually get there early; everyone knows these spots quite well,’’ Hatch said. “There’s a very specific route, past lots of major landmarks.”

There are plenty of places where you will be able to get very close to their car, says Clarkson.

윌리엄 왕자 결혼식에 더 들뜬 미국

찰스 영국 왕세자와 고(故) 다이애나비의 결혼식 이후 영국 왕실의 최대 경사로 꼽히는 이번 결혼식을 앞두고 미국인들은 벌써부터 각종 행사 준비로 분주하다.

캘리포니아주 우드랜드 힐즈에서 `화이트 하트 펍`을 운영하는 골리즈 모이니(36)는 결혼식이 거행되는 29일 오전 2시(현지시간) 자신의 술집에서 실황 중계를 틀어놓고 손님들과 함께 축하할 계획이다.

워싱턴주에 거주하는 로렌 윌슨(28)은 이날 새벽 일찍 일어나 결혼식 실황 중계를 녹화해뒀다가 오후에 자신의 집에서 20명의 여성들을 초청해 티파티를 갖고 함께 시청하기로 했다.

윌슨은 윌리엄 왕자와 영국 왕실에 관심이 많지만 왕실의 며느리가 될 미들턴도 좋아한다며 "그는 왕자를 낚아챈 평범한 여성이다. 그 점이 젊은 여성들의 흥미를 불러 일으키는 것 같다"고 말했다.

콜로라도주에 거주하는 다이앤 라샤펠(72) 할머니는 샌프란시스코에 거주하는 딸의 집을 방문해 함께 결혼식 방송을 시청하기로 했다.

라샤펠은 윌리엄 왕자의 부모인 찰스 왕세자와 다이애나비가 1981년 결혼하던 날에도 딸과 함께 결혼식 방송을 시청했었다.

그는 "우리는 홍차를 준비할 것이고 나는 스콘도 꽤 잘 만든다"며 푸른색 레이스가 달린 신부 어머니용 드레스를 입고 시청할 것이라고 귀띔했다.

미시시피대학 4학년생인 페이지 스웨인(22)도 여자친구들 몇 명과 함께 한때 자신들의 우상이었던 윌리엄 왕자가 `품절남`이 되는 과정을 지켜보기로 했다.

스웨인은 "우리 모두 윌리엄을 사랑하고 우리가 그의 부인이 될 것이라고 생각하면서 자랐다"며 "그가 유부남이 된다는 사실을 분명히 하기 위해 결혼식을 봐야 한다"고 말했다.

다이애나비의 오랜 팬이었다는 버지니아주의 로라 수다드(54)는 결혼식 당일 휴가를 내고 혼자 조용히 결혼식 방송을 지켜볼 계획이다.

미국 방송사들도 영국 왕실의 `세기의 결혼식`을 앞두고 각종 관련 프로그램들을 준비하고 있다.

텍사스 주립대의 영국 전문가 필리파 레빈은 미국인들이 윌리엄과 케이트의 결혼식에 열광하는 것은 범접할 수 없을 것 같았던 영국 왕실에 평민 출신의 미들턴이 당당하게 입성한다는 점이라고 지적했다.

레빈은 "이는 미국 문화에 뿌리깊이 내재돼 있는, 누구나 노력만 하면 성공할 수 있다는 인식을 되새겨준다"며 "많은 사람들에게 자신들도 그렇게 될 수 있다는 가능성을 일깨워주는 것"이라고 설명했다.

한편 윌리엄 왕자는 결혼식을 앞두고 자신의 동료 20여명과 지난 10일 저녁 웨일스의 한 식당에서 식사를 하려다 자리가 부족하다는 식당 측 거부로 발길을 돌려야 했던 사연이 소개돼 화제를 모으기도 했다.
