Gangwon struggles to survive a bad start

Gangwon FC, playing its third season, is off to the worst start ever in K-League history.

The club finished its sixth round match against the Suwon Samsung Bluewings on Saturday with another loss, their sixth of the season.

The team hasn’t had a single win since the K-League started in March and they’re at the bottom of the league standings. But what’s worse is they still haven’t scored a single goal.

About 50 Gangwon FC fans traveled to the Suwon World Cup Stadium hoping to see their team notch its first goal and win of the season but instead the team conceded two goals, one to Mato Neretljak and another to Choi Sung-kuk.

Gangwon’s frustration is understandable, as no football team has performed like this since the K-League started in 1983.

Bucheon SK, now Jeju United FC, had a record of six straight losses in 2003 but they at least managed to score one goal.

When Gangwon started this season, their aim was to enter the playoffs but that is looking increasingly unlikely. Their poor run so early in the season has also resulted in a coaching change that has further disrupted their performance.

After losing 0-3 to Daejeon Citizen FC in the fourth round, head coach Choi Soon-ho left the club, saying he hoped his departure would turn things around.

“The team needs an immediate change,” Choi said to Ilgan Sports after announcing his resignation on April 4. “This is my final action to help the team reach the playoffs.”

Choi was replaced by assistant coach Kim Sang-ho, who immediately began making changes. His first step was to let the players choose the team captain, a task usually done by the head coach.

That backfired in Saturday’s game as new captain Seo Dong-hyun frequently lost his temper and made irrelevant appeals to the referees’ calls that seemed to lead his teammates astray. His erratic behavior also appeared to have a negative impact on the coach, who became enraged after a conversation with the referee that earned him a red card at the end of the first half, making Kim the first head coach to be sent off this season. Later, Kim failed to appear at the post-match press conference.

There are still 24 games to go but if they can’t recover their composure Gangwon may be in for a tough season.
