Cho Yong-pil, the “King of Korean pop,” has kept his promise to return to a lonely island.

The 61-year-old singer and songwriter held a concert on Sorok Island, Goheung, South Jeolla, on Friday afternoon for victims of Hansen’s disease, commonly known as leprosy. The island had been one of the world’s last remaining leper colonies and was literally cut off from the mainland until a bridge opened there in 2007.

Cho promised to return to the island when he visited with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, led by maestro Vladimir Ashkenazy, in May 2010.

About 300 patients crowded the island’s welfare center, the site of Cho’s concert. He started with a jaunty pop tune called “Danbalmeori” (“The Girl with Bobbed Hair”), which had the audience singing along.

“I regret that I could only sing two songs when I was here for the first time last year,” Cho told the audience, “This time, I will sing any songs you request. Please, have fun singing and dancing along.”

In response, the audience applauded and shouted out their requests, including the trot song “Dorawayo Busan-hang-e” (“Return to Busan Port”) and the folk song “Han Obaengnyeon” (“About 500 Years”). Cho was accompanied on his trip to the island by his band The Great Birth.

With a music career spanning more than 40 years, Cho plays a wide range of music from trot to rock.

When Cho sang the ballad “Chingu-yeo” (“Dear Friend”), he walked into the audience and shook hands with each and every patient.

“I really appreciate that Cho has kept his promise to return, when there are many people who have made empty promises,” said Lee Nam-cheol, a 62-year-old Hansen’s patient who has lived on Sorok Island for 46 years.

Cho finished the concert with another promise to return again next year.
