KNB principal bows out

Korea National Ballet said on Wednesday that its principal dancer Kim Hyun-woong, 31, has resigned three weeks after assaulting fellow principal dancer Lee Dong-hoon, 25, at a bar. Lee’s jawbone was injured in the attack.

The two had been scheduled to star as Prince Hodong in the ballet of the same name, which opens today.

The dancers have been replaced with Kim Yong-geol, 38, a former KNB principal dancer and professor at the Korea National University of Arts, and dancer Song Jung-bin, 25.

KNB spokeswoman Kim Hye-won said Kim Hyun-woong tendered his resignation right after the incident but the ballet company initially turned it down, given his talent. The company agreed to accept the resignation following some belated news reports on the scuffle between the two admired dancers, Kim said.

“The company couldn’t ignore public opinion,” she added.
