Incheon United striker sets his sights on Europe

Striker Yoo Byung-soo is set to leave Incheon United FC this summer and will look to play in Europe next season, his agency said Friday.

GSEN, Yoo’s agency, which also manages famous Korean footballers like former Tottenham Hotspurs player Lee Young-pyo and former Fulham FC player Seol Ki-hyeon, said that scouts from top European clubs are already in Korea to check the striker out.

“But it would be better for Yoo to transfer in the summer rather than in the winter because he will need time to adjust to Europe,” GSEN said in a press conference.

According to some media reports, clubs from France’s Ligue 1 and the German Bundesliga already have their eyes on the 23-year-old player. Last December, several French media outlets reported that Yoo had ties to AS Monaco and Stade Rennes.

Yoo, the top scorer in the K-League last year with 22 goals, resigned his contract in February, with a 1.5 million buy-out clause that allows the striker to leave if any team offers an amount of money listed in the contract.

Incheon United has said that if Yoo wants to play in Europe they will support the transfer.

“We promised Yoo we would support him when he signed a new contract,” an Incheon United official told Ilgan Sports, the JoongAng Ilbo’s daily sports paper, on condition of anonymity. “The team is in a difficult situation, but we are ready to help him.”

The Incheon United official said that former head coach Illija Petkovic will also help Yoo with the transfer. The Serbian stepped down in June to care for his wife after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“If Petkovic provides a guarantee for Yoo, the transfer will go smoothly,” the official said.

But some football experts are critical of the announcement, saying the timing is not good considering the club’s current difficulties.

Incheon United, led by former Korean national team head coach Huh Jung-moo, lost goalkeeper Yoon Ki-won on May 6 when the 23-year-old player committed suicide in his car.

Critics also claim that Yoo’s current performance does not bode well for his prospects in Europe. The striker only scored three goals in eight league games, unlike last season, when he became the youngest top scorer in the league.

‘인천 호날두’ 유병수, 올여름 인천 떠나나

'인천 호날두' 유병수(23)가 올 여름 해외 진출을 노린다. 유병수의 에이전트사인 지쎈 측은 "현재 유럽 리그의 스카우트들이 유병수를 직접 체크하기 위해 입국했다. 이적후 빠른 적응을 고려해 겨울보다는 여름에 팀을 옮기는 것을 염두에 두고 있다"고 말했다. 지쎈 측은 정확한 팀 이름은 밝히지 않았지만 프랑스 리그1과 독일 분데스리가 몇몇 팀에서 관심을 보이고 있는 것으로 알려졌다. 이미 지난해 12월 프랑스 에스쁘아드풋볼 등 프랑스 언론은 "AS모나코· 스타드 렌 등 프랑스 클럽이 2010 K-리그 득점왕 유병수에 관심을 보이고 있다"고 보도한 바 있다.

인천 유나이티드도 적극 협조한다는 입장이다. 인천 구단 관계자는 "병수와 올해 초 재계약할 때 해외 이적에 적극 협조하기로 약속했다. 팀이 어려운 상황이지만 선수의 미래를 위해 돕고 있다"고 말했다. 인천은 2월 유병수와 2013년 12월까지 계약을 연장하며 바이아웃(일정 금액 이상의 이적료를 제시할 경우 이적 허용)조항을 계약서에 명시했다. 바이아웃 금액은 150만 달러(약 16억원)수준으로 알려졌다.

숨은 조력자도 있다. 일리야 페트코비치 전 인천 감독이다. 페트코비치 감독은 2009년 인천 부임 후 당시 신인이었던 유병수에게 전폭적인 신뢰를 보냈다. 그는 지난해 6월 아내의 건강이 나빠져 인천 사령탑에서 자진 하차했다. 인천 구단 관계자는 "페트코비치 감독이 자신이 각별히 아끼던 병수를 직접 홍보하고 있는 것으로 안다. 세르비아-몬테네그로 대표팀을 이끌고 2006 독일월드컵에 나섰던 감독님은 유럽에서 유명인사다. 감독님이 병수의 실력을 보장하며 나서준다면 유럽 진출이 더 탄력을 받지 않겠나"며 기대하고 있다.

한편 최근 부상으로 훈련에 불참했던 유병수는 12일 가벼운 러닝을 시작했다.
