Daegu readies for world tourney

With the 2011 World Championships in Athletics about 100 days away, the Korean host city of Daegu is ready to welcome the big names of track and field and host one of the biggest sports events in the world.

The event, held biennially by the International Association of Athletics Federations, will take place from Aug. 27 to Sept. 4 in Daegu, about 300 kilometers (186 miles) southeast of Seoul. It is Korea’s first athletics championships and the third in Asia, after Tokyo in 1991 and Osaka in 2007.

The organizing committee expects the event will draw about 4,000 athletes and officials from 202 countries.

Daegu Stadium, the main venue for the championships, has installed a world-class Mondo track, manufactured by Italy-based flooring company Mondo, according to the committee. The track was certified as Class 1 by the IAAF last month.

The surface, on which Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt broke three world records at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, is known to give a more consistent bounce and traction for athletes than other surfaces.

The organizing committee also upgraded its lighting, scoreboard and sound systems last year.

The championship has extra significance this season because it is the biggest test for international athletes before the 2012 London Olympics.

Among the world stars, Korean athletes have set their sights on advancing to the final round to make their presence felt on their home turf and on the world stage. In its history at the world championships, Korea is the only host country that has never won a medal.

But Korean track and field athletes have been on a roll since they acquitted themselves well at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, winning four gold medals and 10 medals overall.

Triple jumper Kim Deok-hyeon spearheads the campaign after winning his event at the Colorful Daegu Pre-Championships Meeting, a test event held in Daegu last week ahead of the championships.

세계육상 D-100일, 불꽃은 타오르고…

대회 조직위원회, 오늘 대구서 다양한 행사

2011대구세계육상선수권대회 조직위원회는 100일 앞둔 19일 다양한 행사를 마련한다. 대회가 임박한 만큼 국민의 관심을 끌기 위해서다.

이날 오후 2시30분 대구시 중구 동인동 국채보상운동기념공원에서는 ‘마라톤 코스 이어달리기’가 펼쳐진다. 대회때 세계의 건각들이 뛸 코스를 달리며 관심을 촉구하는 행사다. 이어달리기는 국채보상공원∼수성네거리∼범어네거리∼대구은행네거리 등 1구간(8㎞)과 대구은행네거리∼반월당네거리∼국채보상공원 등 2구간(4㎞)으로 진행된다.

대회기와 엠블럼기 봉송 주자 2명이 앞서고 이를 호위하는 호위기 주자 10명이 배치된다. 뒤에는 국제육상경기연맹(IAAF) 212개 회원국의 국기가 따른다. 김황식 국무총리와 헬무트 디겔 IAAF 집행이사, 각국 대사, 한나라당 서상기 의원 등 정치인도 주자로 참가한다. 이들은 200∼300m씩 뛴다. 두 구간을 뛰는 선수는 이들을 포함해 자원봉사자·시민서포터즈·일반 시민 등 2011명이다.

대구스타디움에서는 국기게양식이 열린다. 대구스타디움 동쪽 국기게양대에서 기관·단체장과 프랑스·러시아·카자흐스탄 등 21개 국가 대사 등이 참석한 가운데 IAAF 회원 국기를 게양한다. 조해녕 조직위 위원장·헬무트 디겔 집행이사 등의 축사와 회원국 국기게양, 대회 주제가 합창 순으로 진행된다.

대회 성공을 기원하는 음악회도 선보인다. 오후 7시10분부터 대구스타디움 수변무대에서 인기 가수들이 등장해 육상 열기를 이어간다. 씨스타·제국의아이들·레인보우·인피니트·김태우·마야·조영남·이루 등이 출연한다. 음악회 마지막 무대는 대회 주제가를 부른 인순이와 허각이 장식한다. 이어 불꽃놀이가 밤 하늘을 수놓는다.

육상 분위기 확산을 위해 전국에 중계방송도 한다. 대회 주관방송사인 KBS는 이날 오후 2시부터 1TV를 통해 ‘달리자 함께 내일로’라는 특집방송을 오후 5시까지 내보낸다. 2TV는 음악회를 생중계할 예정이다. 조직위의 문동후 부위원장은 “남은 100일 동안 육상 붐 조성을 위한 홍보에 주력하겠다”고 말했다.

한편 대구시는 원활한 행사 진행을 위해 교통대책을 마련했다. 경찰과 공무원 등 1700여 명을 동원해 오후 2시부터 4시20분까지 마라톤 코스 이어달리기 구간을 단계별로 통제한다.

또 음악회를 찾는 시민이 3만여 명에 이를 것으로 보고 이날 오후 5시부터 10시까지 시내버스 10개 노선 197대를 대구스타디움까지 운행한다.
