Bong goes to U.S. to treat elbow

Bong, who once played for the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds, will visit Kerlan-Jobe Clinic in Los Angeles to see if he needs surgery on his left elbow. The southpaw visited two hospitals in Korea, but got a different diagnosis at each hospital, prompting the Twins to send Bong to the U.S. for a third opinion. One hospital Bong visited in Korea said he is suffering a minor muscle problem, while the other said he may have injured a ligament.
Bong returned to baseball on May 1 after first feeling pain on March 16. He pitched in four games, but started feeling pain again during last Wednesday’s game against the Kia Tigers and has been on the disabled list again since then.
For the Twins, Bong’s absence is a huge loss. The team hoped his experience and leadership would give their pitching a boost. The Seoul-based club is currently second in the Korean Professional Baseball League.
With Bong gone, the team is hoping for solid performances from 25-year-old pitcher Park Hyun-jun, who is the KBO leader in wins and second in ERA. Bong’s absence will also leave Benjamin Jukich as the only lefty in the five-man rotation.
For Bong, who baseball experts consider one of the top three lefties in the KBO along with Ryu Hyun-jin of the Hanwha Eagles and Kim Kwang-hyun of the SK Wyverns, a full recovery - after surgery and rehab - could cost him the rest of the season.
The left-handed pitcher earned his first win of the season as recently as May 12 against the Eagles, but Bong is now likely to close the season with a 1-2 record and 4.96 ERA.
Ilgan Sports, JoongAng Ilbo’s daily sports newspaper, caught up with Bong and talked with him about his injury and future plans.
Q. How’s your elbow feeling now?
A. It gets better when I rest. I feel no pain after resting for a few days. But I’m concerned that the muscle will cramp up again. That’s why I want to get it checked in the U.S.
Two hospitals gave you different diagnoses on your elbow. How did that happen?
One hospital told me my muscle was damaged and another told me that one of the ligaments was damaged. I’m not sure whether I should get surgery or physical therapy. That’s why I want to go the U.S.
Have you ever been to Kerlan-Jobe Clinic?
I haven’t, but many other players have. My club put me in touch with Dr. [Lewis] Yocum, so I’m going to see him.
You obviously feel bad about the injury, right?
I’m really disappointed. The team was doing well for almost the first time since 2006. To tell the truth, I shouldn’t have played until after the injury was healed. I think I disobeyed the coach and trainer’s advice. My head and heart are still on the field, but I feel bad that my body isn’t fit to be there.
Did you talk to your teammates?
I saw them all on Sunday and told them the team could really win the championship this season. I will keep supporting them from off the field.
This is your first elbow injury. Did you get any advice?
I tried to contact Samsung Lions pitcher Bae Young-soo and Yakult Swallows’ pitcher Lim Chang-yong, but couldn’t get in touch with them. I was able to talk with Lim’s agent and he told me I should at least take a year off. He emphasized that I really need to rest. No matter what happens, I will return to baseball next year in good health.

미국 가는 봉중근, “이렇게 좋은 팀 분위기 5년만인데”
봉중근(LG)이 24일 왼쪽 팔꿈치 수술 여부를 결정하기 위해 미국으로 떠났다.
봉중근은 이날 12시경 LG 구단에 들러 인사를 한 뒤 3시 비행기로 미국 LA에 위치한 조브클리닉을 향했다. 올 초부터 그를 괴롭혀온 팔꿈치 통증을 다시 느낀 그는 19일 1군 엔트리에서 제외된 직후 두 군데 병원에서 진료를 받았다. 하지만 진료 결과가 각기 달라, 결국 LG 구단은 봉중근을 미국으로 보내 재활 혹은 수술 여부를 결정하기로 했다. 출국을 앞둔 봉중근의 심정을 들어봤다.
-팔꿈치 상태는 어떤가.
"확실히 팔꿈치는 쉬면 좋아지는 것 같다. 며칠 쉬니 통증은 없다. 하지만 근육이 또 빨리 뭉치고 그럴 것 같아서 확인차 가고싶어했다."
-한국에서는 두 차례 진료 소견이 달랐다고 하더라.
"한쪽에서는 인대보다 근육이 손상됐다고 했다. 다른 한쪽에서는 인대를 구성하는 줄 중 하나가 파열된 것 같다고 했다. 수술을 할 지 재활을 할 지 아직 가닥을 못 잡았다. 그래서 일단 미국으로 갈 예정이다."
-조브클리닉에서 진단 받은 적은 있나.
"아직 한 번도 안가봤다. 미국에서 어깨 수술을 했지만, 그 때는 신시내티 팀 닥터가 했다. 그런데 다른 선수들은 많이 갔더라. 조브 박사는 이제 할아버지고. 그 아래 요컴 박사가 있다. 구단 프런트가 요컴 박사와 연락이 돼 그쪽으로 간다."
-속상할 것 같다.
"약간이 아니고 많이 속상하다. 팀 분위기가 이렇게 좋은 것이 5년만에 처음이다. 사실 완전히 다 나아서 올라왔어야 했는데, 감독님이나 고참 트레이너 말을 내가 좀 거역했다. 이렇게 분위기 좋은 팀에서 함께 뛰어보고 싶었고, 조금이나마 도움을 주고싶던 마음에 완전치 않은 상태에서 괜찮다고 하고 올라왔다. 머리와 마음은 아직도 야구장에 있는데 몸이 안따라줘 속상하다. 또 이런 좋은 분위기의 팀을 두고 잠시 야구장을 벗어나야 한다는 것도 속상하다.
-동료들한테는 어떤 이야기를 했나.
"선수들한테도 정말 미안하다. 엊그제(22일) 선수들을 다 만났다. 많이들 걱정하고 있더라. 정말 고마웠다. 고참 형들, 용택이형, 또 어린 선수들이 다 잘 해줬기에 미안하다고 했고, 올시즌은 정말 우리 팀이 우승할 수 있을 것 같은 분위기라는 얘기도 했다. '잘 해달라. 나는 경기장 밖에서 열심히 응원하겠다'고 부탁했다."
-팔꿈치 파열은 처음이라 긴장되겠다.
"배영수한테도 전화해보고싶고 , 임창용 형한테도 전화를 해 보고 싶었다. 그래서 창용 형 에이전트인 박유현씨와 통화를 했다. 수술을 하면 1년은 잡고 재활을 하라고 하더라. 너무 급하게 하면 다시 부상이 올 수 있기 때문에, 수술은 정말 휴식이 필요하다고 조언해줬다. 수술이든, 재활이든 정말 좋은 모습으로 1년 뒤에 다시 잠실에 돌아올 것이다."
