Coach helps player get to Europe

Son Woong-jung has already raised one of the most talented players in Korean football - Son Heung-min of Hamburg SV in the German Bundesliga. But now, the father of the Hamburg forward is trying to help another Korean footballer succeed in Europe.

Kim Byung-yeon, who played football under Son for seven years in Chuncheon, Gangwon, will sign with FC St. Pauli’s youth team next month, Son told Ilgan Sports, the JoongAng Ilbo’s sports daily, on Wednesday.

The former Chuncheon FC coach added that the only thing that remains before the 17-year-old’s transfer to Germany is some minor paperwork.

Son spotted the 12-year-old Kim playing football with friends and encouraged him to keep playing. And when Kim’s parents worried about their son becoming a footballer, Son convinced them of Kim’s potential. Kim’s parents then sent their son to Kyungshin Middle School, which is renowned for its academy football.

But for Kim, the decision was devastating. The 181-centimeter-tall defensive midfielder recalled that during the years in middle school, what he missed most was Son’s guidance and he admitted to occasionally visiting Son for practice.

“Academic football wasn’t the best for me because it was too pushy and no fun” Kim said. “I missed having fun, like the football Son Heung-min and I played when I was young.”

When Kim transferred to Pungsaeng High School a year later he quit playing academy football. He went back to Chuncheon, Gangwon, where Son was coaching for Chuncheon Hoban FC, and his playing took off.

Last October, Kim trained with the Hamburg SV youth team for three weeks. He was invited to join the team again last month but Son Heung-min’s agent Thies Bliemeister asked him to try out with St. Pauli, saying it would be better to start off with a small club.

For Kim, it was the right choice.

“When I played with Hamburg youth team, it was hard to get along with them,” said Kim. “But the players from St. Pauli really welcomed me and I liked the team atmosphere.”

Kim also said he made his choice because he will be living near his old friend Son Heung-min. Kim said he plans to train with the team on weekdays and with the 19-year-old attacker on the weekends.

“Son [Heung-min] made me promise that ‘we’d never be satisfied as prospects,’” Kim said. “I want to keep that promise.”
