Quirky singer ready for her star turn

Jang Jae-in is not a typical celebrity. She is not conventionally beautiful and her clothing does not exactly follow the latest fashion trends. She performs sitting on the floor, strumming her guitar. But her quirky style did not stop her from making it to the finals of one of Korea’s biggest talent competitions.

Last year, Jang astonished the nation by becoming one of four finalists on “Superstar K” with her command of diverse musical styles, including folk, soul and power ballads.

Arriving for a recent interview with the JoongAng Ilbo, she had that ever familiar big smile on her face.

“Did you listen to my CD yet? What did you think?” she said when she walked in.

The next day, she was to release her new EP “Day Breaker,” which she wrote and composed herself. The previous day, she had given her first concert as a professional singer.

As soon as Jang sat down she was quite the chatterer - a 20-year-old at heart.

Yet Jang’s young age says little about the maturity of her music and most of the lyrics on her new EP are far more mature than her young age would suggest. They are smooth and inspiring and supported by interesting melodies.

“I’m pretty confident about my debut album. If I think there’s a single flaw in a song that I’m not fully satisfied with, I refuse to let other people hear it,” Jang said. “But now I find myself trying to do just that.”

From songs like “I Love Paul,” a tribute to the Beatles, to such cool and melodious ballads like “Memories like Watercolors,” her music is sleekly and effortlessly composed, as if she has been doing this her entire life.

The title song “Toy Soldiers” has a retro style with Jang’s soft vocals layered over a light rhythm. Alluding to the life of toy soldiers, Jang talks about people’s willingness to conform and lose their individuality.

“I’ve thought I was different ever since I was a kid,” she said. “When other kids were following K-pop groups, I was at home reading books and listening to music, so I was often excluded. I wrote this song about toy soldiers to say that we need to respect ourselves.”

There was much talk about Jang’s personality throughout her journey on “Superstar K” last year.

Everyone knew her as the girl who sat on the floor, jamming on her guitar. But although her style was criticized by viewers, she received an equal number of positive comments from people who referred to her as uniquely talented.

Her leap to stardom is a long-held dream.

“My dream has always been to be a star singer. I wanted to create music that everyone could enjoy and love,” she said. “I auditioned only out of curiosity but thankfully the viewers appreciated me for who I am.”

Her “Superstar K” appearance has turned her life around. She is now so popular that uploading a photo of herself to her blog causes a commotion. At the same time, she has also discovered the downside of celebrity.

“People care so much about the most trivial parts of my personal life,” she said.

She also seems to understand that fame can be damaging in other ways. On the morning of the interview, she had written on her blog: “Fame can make you cocky; I hope I can keep myself in check.”

Not long ago, Jang gave an impromptu performance in front of Hongik University. She sat there, alone with her guitar, in the midst of a light rain.

“I just suddenly had the urge to sing on the street because it was from the streets that my music first originated,” she said.

Word about her spread among her fans and the area was immediately flooded.

Jang says that while she appreciates her newfound fame, she also knows that the spotlight handed her from “Superstar K” is only temporary and will soon flicker out unless she does something of her own.

“I don’t want to receive attention as a star but as a distinguished Korean singer-songwriter and I want to see that I am growing as a musician.”
