Korea’s Lee Young-pyo successor breaks out

The normally defensive-minded Korean footballer Kim Young-kwon chose a good day to break out of his shell by featuring in both of the national team’s goals in its 2-1 win over Serbia on Friday at the Seoul World Cup stadium.

The left back helped open the scoring with a perfectly timed cross from the left flank for captain Park Chu-young to score in the 9th minute. Kim collected his national team debut goal in the 53rd minute to make the score 2-0 against 16-ranked Serbia.

He was later selected the man of the match.

“I didn’t think I would score in this game,” Kim said. “But I am happy that I contributed to my team’s victory.”

Kim, who played only his fourth international game on Friday, isn’t a natural left back. The 21-year-old usually fills the center back position for his Japanese club Omiya Ardija.

National team coach Cho Kwang-rae first tested Kim at center back in a friendly against Nigeria last year but when veteran left back Lee Young-pyo announced his national team retirement after the Asian Cup in January, he decided to move Kim to the left side.

Kim’s first game at left back for the national team came against Honduras in March but the Korean failed to make an impression on Cho.

He showed he was hesitant to move forward when his side was attacking and failed to deliver crosses.

This time, however, Kim was a different player.

The defender showed that he has offensive prowess akin to his positional predecessor Lee Young-pyo, who served more than 10 years as a left back for Korea.

With his impressive performance against Serbia, Kim was dubbed “the second coming of Lee Young-pyo” by fans and media over the weekend. But the player said Lee’s shoes will be tough ones to fill.

“I feel good when I hear from people that I am the successor to Lee but sometimes I feel pressure,” said Kim. “I am trying to get over that pressure and show my plays.”

At the post match press conference, Cho was careful not to tag Kim as Lee’s successor but the coach acknowledged that Kim has potential to be as good as Lee some day.

“Of course Lee is a better player than Kim,” said Cho. “But in some aspects, Kim is better than Lee and that is why I expect more good plays from Kim in near future.”

김영권 “이영표 후계자란 말, 기분 좋지만 부담”

축구대표팀 수비수 김영권(21·오미야)이 세르비아와의 평가전에서 1골 1도움의 맹활약으로 펼치며 '이영표의 후계자'를 찾는 조광래 대표팀 감독의 마음을 흡족하게 했다.

김영권은 3일 서울월드컵경기장에서 열린 세르비아와의 경기에 포백(4-back) 수비의 왼쪽 자리에서 풀타임을 뛰면서 1골 1도움을 올려 한국 대표팀의 2-1 승리를 이끌었다.

지난 1월 카타르 아시안컵 이후 국가대표팀에서 은퇴한 이영표(알 힐랄)를 이을 후보 중 하나인 김영권으로서는 경쟁에서 우위를 점할 수 있는 기분 좋은 하루였다.

이날 경기의 MVP도 김영권 몫이었다.

수비수임에도 A매치 네 경기 만에 데뷔골 맛을 본 김영권은 "무엇보다도 내 득점으로 팀이 승리해 기쁘다"고 소감을 밝혔다.

소속팀에서도 중앙수비수로만 뛰어온 김영권은 지난 3월 온두라스 대표팀과의 친선경기에 이어 대표팀에서 두 경기째 왼쪽 풀백을 맡았다.

김영권은 "아무래도 첫 경기 때보다는 위치 선정이나 세밀함 등에서 편해졌다"며 새 옷에 맞춰가는 자신의 모습을 전했다.

그는 "골 생각은 전혀 없었다"고 했지만, 이달 결혼을 앞둔 대표팀 선배 박주영(AS모나코)과 이정수(알 사드)를 위해 동료 홍정호(제주)와 함께 팔짱을 끼고 신랑, 신부 입장 장면을 연출하는 세리머니를 준비했다.

하지만 골을 넣고 난 뒤 너무 정신이 없어 준비한 세리머니를 깜빡 잊었다고 말했다.

이날 대표팀 수비진은 후반 막판에 집중력이 떨어지면서 한 골을 내줬다.

김영권은 "월드컵 예선이 아닌 친선경기에서 실수가 나와 다행이다. 공부 잘했다"고 말했다.

김영권은 '이영표의 후계자'라는 말에 대한 견해도 밝혔다.

그는 "영표 형은 대표팀에서 10년 넘게 왼쪽 풀백을 지켰던 선배다. 그런 훌륭한 선배를 이을 선수라는 말에 기분이 좋지만 부담스럽다"면서 "부담이 생기면 제 플레이를 할 수 없어 떨쳐내려고 노력하고 있다"고 말했다.
