BETHESDA, Md. - Choi Kyung-ju will be able to feed off his triumphant memories on the Blue Course at Congressional Country Club in his bid for major glory at this week’s U.S. Open.

Four years ago, the Korean, known as K.J. Choi in the U.S., won the PGA Tour’s inaugural AT&T National hosted here by Tiger Woods, closing with a 2-under-par 68 to clinch a three-shot victory.

Although the U.S. Open set-up will be very different at Congressional this week with its trademark narrowed fairways, slick greens and thick rough, Choi enjoys a huge comfort level at the venue.

“It feels good to come back here ... to be back at a place where I won the 2007 AT&T National,” the 41-year-old told reporters on Monday. “It feels like home here.

“This course is very difficult but yet I think the USGA [United States Golf Association] sets the course up pretty fair for the players.

“The course definitely plays different than when I won in 2007 but, having played both setups on this course, it gives me less pressure because I know where to hit it.”

Choi, an eight-time winner on the U.S. PGA Tour, felt approach shots would be one of the most challenging factors this week on the 7,574-yard course, the second longest layout to stage a U.S. Open.

“The U.S. Open is known for its hard greens, so it’s going to be hard to spin the ball on the green,” the Korean golfer said, speaking through an interpreter.

“The key point is whether you’re able to hit your second shots and stop them on the green ... stick it to the pin within four or five yards. Once you’re able to do that, I think you have a better advantage.

“Yesterday and on Saturday, I practised nine holes each and I don’t remember hitting anything shorter than an eight-iron for my second shots. It was mostly six- and seven-irons.”

Nicknamed “Tank” because he could squat 350 pounds as a teenage powerlifter, the 5-foot-8 Choi does not rank among the game’s longer hitters.

“Guys who are able to hit it longer will definitely have an advantage here,” he said. “I’m not that much of a long hitter so I feel like I’m going to have to be using a lot of four or five-irons for my second shots.

“So for me to be able to hit high cut shots with those long irons is going to be key this week.”

Choi’s most recent PGA Tour victory came at last month’s Players Championship at Sawgrass where he became the first Asian to win golf’s unofficial “fifth major.”

He will tee off in Thursday’s opening round at Congressional in the company of American Matt Kuchar and Britain’s Paul Casey.

(BPNTHWAM:Best Player Never To Have Won A Major)’조를 만든다.
