Pyeongchang bid readying for vote

With only two days before the International Olympic Committee votes to decide the host city of the 2018 Winter Olympics, Pyeongchang is working on its final push in Durban, South Africa, where the IOC General Assembly will be held Wednesday.
About 100 bid committee members and 80 supporting staff arrived in Durban on Friday, while bid chief Cho Yang-ho arrived in the South African city on Saturday after Pyeongchang finished its presentation in front of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (Anoca) General Assembly in Togo on Tuesday.
Cho, who discussed the bid with IOC members at the wedding of Prince Albert II of Monaco on Friday, said that Pyeongchang is ready to impress and will work hard to be selected as the host city for the Winter Games.
“We are finally here after a two-year journey,” said Cho upon arrival in Durban on Saturday. “We will make our best effort until the last moment to win the right to host.”
Cho said during his stay in Durban that Pyeongchang will emphasize its differences to the two other candidate cities - Munich and Annecy, France - and will explain the message behind its bid slogan “New Horizons.”
“I want to think positively [about the result] because we have such a good message,” Cho said. “The atmosphere looks great right now, but we have to wait until the end.”
Pyeongchang, bidding for the third time after narrow defeats for the 2010 and 2014 Winter Games, would become the first Asian city outside Japan to host the Winter Games if it wins the vote Wednesday.
To garner votes, the city in Gangwon has been stressing its plan to step up as a Winter sports hub for Asia and has emphasized the city’s multiple venues’ close proximity to each other.
The bid committee has also presented on its “Dream Program,” which since 2004, has helped young athletes from countries without a developed winter sports scene to visit Pyeongchang and experience winter sports.
The Pyeongchang bid committee also held a high-level roundtable meeting on Saturday with Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Choung Byoung-gug and other officials with a stake in the process. In attendance were bid chief Cho, Korean Olympic Committee chairman Park Yong-sung, Gangwon Governor Choi Moon-soon and special envoy for Pyeongchang’s bid, Kim Jin-sun.
“We have made it this far without any major problems, but the remaining days will be the most important for us,” Choung said. “Now we have to put in our best effort to win the vote.”
Meanwhile, in Durban, the bid committee is rehearsing its final presentation to the IOC, which will be held at the International Convention Center.
Korean President Lee Myung-bak arrived in Durban Saturday and is expected to speak before the IOC Wednesday.
German President Christian Wulff will join Lee on the list of heads of state who will visit Durban, but not French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who has decided not to attend the meeting. The French government said Prime Minister Francois Fillon will make the trip instead.

‘총성 없는 전쟁’, 2018년 겨울올림픽 유치를 위한 마지막 레이스에 불이 붙었다.
이명박 대통령은 3일(현지시간) 오전 90여 분간 남아공 더반 숙소호텔에서 평창 겨울올림픽 유치를 위한 현지 전략회의를 주재했다. 평창 유치위에선 조양호 위원장과 박용성 대한체육회장, 김진선 체육협력대사가, 정부에선 정병국 문화체육관광부 장관과 김성환 외교통상부 장관, 최중경 지식경제부 장관이 참석했다. 청와대에선 천영우 외교안보수석과 김대기 경제수석, 김두우 홍보수석이 동석했다.
이 대통령은 회의장에 들어서자마자 이들에게 “잘 주무셨어요”란 인사말만 건넨 뒤 곧바로 회의를 시작했다. 파트별로 준비 점검 상황을 챙겼고 “지성이면 감천이다. 하늘을 움직이자”고 독려했다.
토비 도슨 이날 회의에선 2차 투표까지 가는 가상 시나리오에 따른 전략도 검토했다고 한다. 2010·2014년 대회 도전에서 연거푸 1차 투표에 1위를 하고도 2차 투표에서 역전당한 씁쓸한 경험을 되풀이하지 않겠다는 것이다. 이 대통령은 이후 영어로 세 차례 프레젠테이션 리허설을 했고, 평창 유치위의 현장본부도 찾았다. 이곳에서 겨울올림픽 금메달리스트인 모태범·이상화·이승훈 선수 등과 만나 “연습도 못 하고 다 이리로 왔군”이라며 고마워했다.
최종 프레젠테이션 연습도 마지막 점검을 시작했다. 피겨 스타 김연아 선수를 비롯한 발표자들은 1대 1 맞춤식 훈련을 통해 리허설을 했다. 발표자들은 걸음걸이·손짓·눈짓 등 미세한 동작까지 반복 연습했다. 김연아는 “영어로 발표하기 때문에 입에 붙게 호텔방에서도 열심히 연습하고 있다”고 말했다. 역전패는 결코 없다는 각오다.
2006년 토리노 겨울올림픽 모굴스키 동메달리스트인 한국 입양아 출신의 미국인 스키선수 토비 도슨도 평창유치위의 홍보대사 역할뿐 아니라 프레젠테이션에도 참가한다.
AP통신은 2일 노르웨이 IOC 위원 게르하르트 하이베르크의 말을 인용해 “평창과 뮌헨이 여전히 앞서 있고 안시는 약간 뒤처져 있다”고 보도했다. 그러나 그는 “모두가 마지막 프레젠테이션을 기다리고 있다. 많은 이들이 아직 마음을 정하지 않았다”고 덧붙였다. 투표권을 가진 IOC 위원은 모두 110명이다. 실제 투표가 예상되는 97~99명 중 부동표는 15~20표 정도로 추정된다.
한편 베른하르트 슈방크 뮌헨 유치위 CEO는 3일 기자회견에서 “선수 중심의 경기로 꽉 들어찬 관중석과 즐길거리와 볼거리가 가득한 올림픽을 만들 것”이라고 강조했다. 독일은 크리스티안 불프 대통령이, 프랑스는 니콜라 사르코지 대통령을 대신해 프랑수아 피용 총리가 더반을 방문한다.
