Park qualifies for 200m freestyle final

Korean swimmer Park Tae-hwan qualified for the men’s 200-meter freestyle final at the FINA World Championships in Shanghai yesterday, capturing his chance to collect a second gold in the competition following his win in the 400-meter freestyle on Sunday.

Park, 22, clocked in at 1 minute 46.23 seconds in the semifinals at the Oriental Sports Center, placing fourth among 16 swimmers. He will swim in the sixth lane in today’s final.

Yannick Agnel of France will start in the fourth lane in the finals after finishing first in the semis with a time of 1 minute 45.93 seconds. Finishing in second was Paul Biedermann of Germany, who holds the current world record of 1 minute 42 seconds. U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps took fifth, at 1 minute 46.91 seconds.

“The 200-meter freestyle will be decided in the last 100 meters, especially between 125 and 170 meters,” Park told Yonhap News Agency after the qualifying round. “It is true I feel somewhat comfortable after winning the 400-meter event, but I will try my best in the remaining events.”

The 200-meter freestyle is Park’s second best event. He won bronze in the event at the 2007 Worlds in Melbourne, Australia, and was the runner up in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing behind Phelps. Park was first in the event at the 2010 Asian Games, setting the Asian record with a time of 1 minute 44.80 seconds.

Park is looking for a solid comeback this year after falling flat in the previous Worlds in Rome two years ago. But he’s off to a good start after winning on Sunday. His time of 3 minutes 42.04 seconds put him ahead of his rival Sun Yang of China by more than a second.

There won’t be a rematch between the two rivals because Yang decided not to compete in the 200-meter event even though he has the season’s best time of 1 minute 44.99 seconds. Instead, Yang has decided to focus on long distance events like the 800- and 1500-meter freestyle races.

박태환, 200m 4위 결승진출…‘기적을 한 번 더’

'기적을 한 번 더.' 박태환(22·단국대)이 200m에서도 결승에 진출하며 순항을 이어갔다. 400m 금메달에 이어 2관왕도 기대해 볼 수 있는 상승세다.

박태환은 25일 중국 상하이 오리엔탈 스포츠센터에서 열린 200m 준결승에서 1분46초23으로 터치패드를 찍었다. 1조에서 경기에 나선 박태환은 야닉 아넬(프랑스·1분45초62)에 이어 2위로 골인, 전체 16명 중 4위로 결승에 진출했다. 2조에서 경기한 박태환의 경쟁자 마이클 펠프스(미국)는 1분46초92를 기록, 전체 5위로 결승에 합류했다.

박태환은 오전 치러진 예선 8조에서 4번 레인을 배정받아 세계신기록 보유자 파울 비더만(독일)과 경쟁을 벌였다. 먼저 치고 나간 비더만을 추격한 박태환은 막판 스퍼트로 비더만과 거의 동시에 결승점에 도착했다. 최종 기록은 비더만이 1분46초56, 박태환이 0.07초 뒤진 1분46초63. 박태환은 전체 4위로 준결승에 진출했다.

오후에 열린 준결승도 무난했다. 5번 레인을 배정받은 박태환은 0.65초로 8명 중 가장 빠른 스타트를 했다. 박태환은 다른 선수들이 빠르게 치고나갔지만 서두르지 않았다. 50m 지점(25초31)은 7위로 통과했지만 차분히 자신의 레이스를 펼쳤다. 그리고 작전대로 100m~150m 구간에서 힘을 냈다. 100m를 돌면서 52초59로 4위까지 올랐고, 150m 구간에서 1분19초52로 2위까지 올라갔다. 막판 스퍼트로 아넬을 바짝 쫓은 박태환은 체력 안배를 위해서인지 더 이상 속도를 내지는 않았다. 최종 기록은 1분46초92. 지난해 광저우 아시안게임에서 세운 자신의 최고 기록(1분44초80)보다는 1.43초 뒤졌다.

박태환은 레인 배정에서도 좋은 결과를 얻었다. 1번 레인에서 달렸던 400m 결승과는 달리 6번 레인에서 상대를 확인하며 경기할 수 있어서다. 결승은 26일 오후 7시(한국시간) 같은 장소에서 열린다.
