Lee out for 9 months after right leg fracture

Korean winger Lee Chung-yong will be out of action for at least nine months after breaking his right leg in a preseason friendly, his English club, Bolton Wanderers FC, announced on their Web site yesterday.

The 23-year-old underwent a successful operation at Royal Gwent Hospital following Bolton’s 3-1 win against Welsh club Newport County AFC.

Lee was tackled in the 25th minute by Newport midfielder Tom Miller and could be seen writhing on the grass until he was carried off on a stretcher with his leg strapped in a brace.

“We will make sure Chung-yong gets all the support he needs, as now it is all about his recovery and well-being,” Bolton manager Owen Coyle said on the club’s Web site.

Lee has become a key player for Bolton since transferring from FC Seoul two summers ago, having played 76 matches (including cup games) for the English club so far. But with the injury, Lee is likely to miss most of the English Premier League season, which will start next Saturday.

“This is Chung-yong’s first major injury [in his career] and we are worried how he will overcome this situation,” Lee’s agent, Kim Seung-tae, told Ilgan Sports yesterday. “It will be important to first cure his emotional feelings quickly.”

Kim said he will travel to England tomorrow with Lee’s father to check up on the player’s condition.

Lee’s injury is also a huge blow for the Korean national team, which is about to begin the third round of the regional qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup. Lee has been an important figure for the national team in his 40 international matches. He scored two goals in the last World Cup and has mainly been the starter on the right flank since he made his international debut in 2008.

Korea, which will face Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon in the third round of qualifiers, has been having trouble finding a solid player on the left wing - a position still permanently unfilled after Park Ji-sung’s national team retirement in January. Now, with Lee’s absence, the team has to find a winger who can play on the right flank.

“It’s big trouble for us with Lee injured,” Korea’s head coach Cho Kwang-rae told Yonhap News Agency yesterday. “I don’t know when he’ll be back, but he is young and we expect a fast recovery.”

이청용(23·볼턴)의 정강이뼈가 부러졌다. 회복에 최소 9개월이 걸릴 전망이어서 소속팀 볼턴은 물론 한국 국가대표팀도 비상이 걸렸다.

　이청용은 31일(한국시간) 웨일스 뉴 포트 스타디움에서 열린 뉴 포트 카운티AFC(5부리그)와 연습 경기에서 상대 미드필더 톰 밀러(21)의 태클에 부상을 당했다.

　축구에서 사라져야 할 악의적인 태클이었다. 이청용이 왼쪽 측면에서 중앙으로 드리블하자 밀러는 자신의 오른발에 체중을 실어 이청용의 오른쪽 정강이를 가격했다. 그라운드에 쓰러진 이청용은 부상 부위를 움켜잡고 고통스러워했다. 곧장 경기장 인근 로열 그웬트 병원으로 후송된 이청용은 골절 부위를 접합하는 수술을 받았다. 이청용은 병원에서 휴식을 취한 뒤 1일 볼턴으로 이동했다.

　BBC, 볼턴뉴스, 프리미어리그 공식 홈페이지 등 영국 언론은 이청용의 부상 소식을 크게 전하며 “이청용이 최소 9개월간 결장할 것”이라고 보도했다. 오언 코일 볼턴 감독은 “재능 있고 언젠가는 세계적인 무대에서 뛸 선수가 심각한 부상을 당했다”고 안타까워했다. 그는 “이청용의 빠른 회복을 위해 구단 차원에서 필요한 모든 조치를 할 것”이라고 했다. 이청용은 볼턴에서 지난 두 시즌 동안 9골·16도움을 올리며 팀의 핵심 선수로 자리 잡았다.

태클을 당한 이청용이 쓰러지고 있다. [동영상 캡처]　　영국 언론의 보도보다 복귀가 좀 더 빠를 수 있다는 의견도 있다. 2002년과 2006년 월드컵대표팀 주치의를 지낸 김현철 박사(대한축구협회 의무분과위원)는 “현지 언론이 이청용의 부상을 ‘더블 프랙처(double fracture·정강이뼈 위와 아래 부분이 모두 골절된 것)’라 발표했다. 한 부분이든 두 부분이든 뼈가 붙는 시기는 똑같다. 이청용은 나이가 어려 뼈가 더 빨리 붙을 수 있다”고 말했다.

　이청용의 부상으로 2014년 브라질 월드컵 아시아 3차 예선을 앞둔 조광래 축구 국가대표팀 감독의 머리도 복잡해졌다.

　조 감독은 “이청용이 있는 오른쪽 사이드는 전혀 고민하지 않고 있었는데 큰일이다”며 “이청용의 공백은 대표팀에 큰 손실이지만 3차 예선은 이청용 없이 치른다는 각오로 준비하겠다”고 말했다. 이어 “이청용이 선수 생활 중 가장 큰 부상을 당했는데 심리적으로 충격을 받지 않았을까 걱정된다. 긍정적인 마음을 갖고 재활을 잘 받았으면 좋겠다”고 덧붙였다.

　　한편 한국은 이날 브라질에서 열린 아시아 3차 예선 조 편성 결과 쿠웨이트·아랍에미리트(UAE)·레바논과 함께 B조에 속했다. 한국은 9월 2일 고양에서 레바논을 상대로 3차 예선 첫 경기를 치르며 최종 예선에 오르기 위해서는 최소 조 2위를 차지해야 한다.

　조 감독은 “최근 중동 축구가 상향 평준화되고 있다. 중동 원정에 따른 선수들의 체력 부담을 줄여 주는 것이 승부에 큰 영향을 미칠 것”이라고 했다. 북한은 일본·우즈베키스탄·시리아와 C조에 포함돼 험난한 3차 예선이 예상된다.
