Deluge doesn’t dampen spirits as Jisan rocks out

Wellington boots were essential attire at this year’s Jisan Valley Rock Festival, which escaped Korea’s summer monsoon rains in its first two years but was not so fortunate this time around. Meanwhile, bands like the Chemical Brothers and the Arctic Monkeys kept the drenched masses’ spirits up.

Festivalgoers who arrived on Saturday were unlucky to miss the Brothers, who played on the opening day, but would have been happier to learn they also skipped the 6 a.m. downpour that soaked the site. They arrived to find the grounds sodden and, unfortunately, bearing the faintest odor of sewage.

In other words, the green valley was now a real festival site.

The first hurdle, however, was actually getting to the festival. English-language Web sites in Korea are notorious for not being updated as new information comes to light, or for simply not carrying the wealth of information that their Korean-language equivalents do.

As such, it was a huge relief to find that the little table selling tickets for the buses ferrying people to and from the festival was exactly where the Web site said it would be: at exit 5 of Ori Station, an hour or so on the subway from central Seoul.

Festival numbers swelled on Saturday to catch the Arctic Monkeys, on their maiden trip to Korea, and the return of rock veterans Feeder. And they stayed around for Jang Ki-ha and the Faces on Sunday.

The wet weather did little to sour the mood of either the crowds or the bands. This was especially the case for Grant Nicholas, the singer of Welsh-Japanese combo Feeder, who was having a great time, judging by the smile on his face.

Like previous years, the festival was fairly well organized with very light security. There were good options when it came to food and drinks, especially in the ski resorts cafeteria that was selling Korean staples like kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew), the perfect tonic for the morning after the night before.

The lineup was not as strong as in previous years, but people still turned up in droves, dressed as cartoon characters or waving banners and flags, and dancing regardless of the weather.

Jang Ki-ha and the Faces seemed to draw the most people, with thousands of enthusiastic Koreans, and non-Koreans, swaying and singing along. The Jimmy Eat World set sounded like they were recording the soundtrack for a motion-picture version of U.S. teen drama “The O.C.,” or “One Tree Hill.” Incubus was not really any better as their set list was very tame. The songs they performed from their new album were generally too slow for a rock festival crowd. Fans of either would probably have been satisfied, but it is doubtful whether they won over many new fans at Jisan.

Meanwhile on Sunday, Suede, who are generally very good, proved that they are not really a headline band. Their songs aren’t really the kind of music that gets a large crowd pumped up and that is what was required to close the festival.

However, the festival was a success overall, with almost everyone leaving with digital cameras full of memories and new stories to tell, but the organizers seem to have made less of an effort with the lineup compared to previous years.

If Jisan is to retain its popularity in future years, the organizers need to perhaps try and step out of the shadow of the Fuji Rock Festival and attract bands on their own merit. But the impression this year’s festival left is that Jisan got whatever bands they could after Fuji had their say.
