Established in 1897 in Pyongyang, Soongsil University is Korea’s first university.

The school has over a century of history and is famous for its IT department and specialized department for Venture & Entrepreneurship as well as being involved in serving communities in tandem with learning.

Around 3,000 students participate in local projects and about 500 students per semester participate in both short- and long-term volunteering projects overseas. In July the school started the Soongsil Education Missionary Center in Dumaguete, Philippines, which aims to raise teenagers from the Philippines and Korea into global leaders. In July 2010 the school built an elementary school in Santiniketan, India, to provide a chance for poor children to get an education and in 2008 it launched an MBA course at Vietnam industrial university.

Soongsil University opened a Korean language center at Shenyang Aerospace University in May 2009 and is introducing Korean language and culture to many students in China. In July 2010, it opened the Soongsil Living Water School, an elementary school in Hanudanga village in the Santiniketan region of India, providing education opportunities to children living in the poorest region of Santiniketan.

Soongsil University is also dreaming of starting a global industrial-academic link hub starting in Southeast Asia. In April 2010 the school received a promise of a construction fund to build a 30 billion won Soongsil University in Vietnam through an MOU with a local international company and is planning to complete the construction by 2015.

The school is currently active in Cambodia and hope to expand its education services to Laos, Myanmar and Indonesia. Along with this Southeast Asian education and volunteering association the university is planning Southwest Asian, Northeast Asian and Eurasian education and volunteering associations. The school also plans to expand its education service base to Turkey, Bangladesh, Tanzania, Uganda and Congo. This is the true global vision that Soongsil is dreaming of.

Soongsil University recently introduced a new ‘5 major undergraduate advancing program’ to strengthen undergraduate education. One of these programs is the ‘7+1 program’ that will help students improve their global awareness. The program entails studying seven semesters at school and one participating in a local or overseas internship, a voluntary project or overseas training. One of the best merits of the 7+1 program is that the students do not need to take leave from their studies to participate in overseas training programs or internships.
