New head of the KBO to expand market

The new head of Korea’s top professional baseball league said yesterday he will work to ensure “fair” competition in the nation’s most popular sport.

Taking office as the 12th commissioner of the Korea Baseball Organization, Koo Bon-neung, chairman of the local metal conglomerate Heesung Group, said he will bring his “passion and love for baseball” to his position.

“I hesitated when I was first offered the job,” Koo said at the inauguration ceremony. “Now I feel a heavy sense of responsibility to open a new future for professional baseball in Korea, and I will try my best to build a fair baseball league through transparent management.”

Koo, 62, was nominated at a board meeting of KBO general managers on Aug. 2. He won final approval from the owners of all eight teams.

Koo is the younger brother of LG Group Chairman Koo Bon-moo and an elder brother of Koo Bon-joon, vice chairman of LG Electronics and former owner of the LG Twins club in the KBO. Koo Bon-neung himself has served as a consultant for the Seoul-based Twins.

The new commissioner said improving ballparks across the country and broadening the game’s market will also be important tasks on his watch.

Koo will replace You Young-koo, who resigned in May after being arrested on corruption charges. He will serve until the end of this year, when You’s term was set to expire, and is widely expected to be nominated again for a new three-year term.

Since You’s resignation, the KBO had been run by an interim commissioner, Lee Yong-il. Team presidents had sought to nominate one of the eight owners. They reached out to Koo after all the club owners turned down the offer.

All KBO clubs are owned and operated by private companies, including major conglomerates. Koo is only the third commissioner without a political background in the KBO’s 29-year history.

Known as a baseball fan, Koo played organized baseball into his mid-teens and once published a pictorial book of rare black-and-white baseball photos he had collected. He even held a photo exhibition in 2005 with his collection of some 120,000 baseball images.

The KBO has enjoyed unprecedented success in recent years, buoyed by Korea’s success at the Olympics, the Asian Games and the World Baseball Classic.

The league is poised to break its all-time single-season attendance record for the third straight year.

구본능 회장, 19대 총재 취임

구본능(62) 희성그룹 회장이 22일 서울 도곡동 야구회관에서 제19대 한국야구위원회(KBO) 총재로 취임했다. 올해 말까지 유영구 전 총재의 잔여 임기를 채운 뒤 내년 20대 총재로 3년 임기를 새로 시작할 전망이다.

　구 총재는 ‘LG가(家)’가 배출한 야구선수 출신 총재다. 부산에서 태어난 그는 경남중 재학 시절 외야수로 뛰었다. 구 총재는 이날 취임식에서 “50여 년 전 중학 야구팀의 볼 보이로 시작했던 제가 오늘 한국프로야구를 이끌어 가는 막중한 자리인 KBO 총재에 취임하게 됐다”며 감회를 나타냈다.

　구 총재의 야구 사랑은 각별하다. 최근까지 사회인 야구 경기에 뛰었고 틈나는 대로 고교와 프로야구 구장을 찾는다. 2005년엔 원로 야구인 하일씨와 함께 ‘사진으로 본 한국야구 100년(1)’을 발간했다. 2007년에는 장충리틀야구장에 전광판을 기증하기도 했다.

　그의 경남중·고 3년 후배인 허구연 KBO 실행위원장은 구 총재에 대해 “중학교 시절 주전 외야수로 뛸 만큼 야구 실력이 뛰어났다. 고교 진학과 함께 집안의 반대로 선수생활을 접었다. 그래서 야구에 대한 애정이 더 깊어졌을 것”이라고 말했다.

　LG가와 프로야구의 인연은 1990년으로 거슬러 올라간다. 이 해 LG의 전신인 럭키금성그룹은 MBC 청룡 구단을 인수해 프로야구에 뛰어들었다. LG 트윈스 구단주는 구 총재의 형인 구본무 LG그룹 회장에 이어 2008년부터는 동생 구본준 LG전자 부회장이 맡았다. 구 총재는 96년 1월 LG그룹에서 분가해 희성그룹을 출범시켰다.

　유영구 전 총재 사퇴 뒤 9개 구단 사장들은 프로야구의 안정된 발전을 위해 ‘구단주 총재’를 옹립하자고 의견을 모았다. 그러나 현 구단주들이 모두 고사하자 자연스레 구본능 회장이 대안으로 떠올랐다. 이용일 전 KBO 총재대행은 “구 총재는 야구에 대한 열정과 경영인의 식견이 어우러진 인물”이라고 평했다.

　구 총재는 취임 기자회견에서 “처음 총재직 제의를 받았을 때는 망설임도 많았다. 그러나 야구에 대한 열정과 애정으로 혼신을 다해 봉사한다면 길을 찾을 수 있을 것 같아 이 자리에 서게 됐다”고 말문을 열었다. 그는 곧바로 KBO의 혁신을 주문했다. “프로야구 출범 30년이 됐는데 KBO가 그동안 잘해왔지만 아직 어린이 조직 같다”고 지적한 뒤 “올해 프로야구는 연 관중이 650만 명을 넘을 것으로 추산되는 국민스포츠지만 미래가 밝지만은 않다. 뛰는 조직, 살아있는 조직을 만들겠다”고 말했다.

　이어 대외협력업무 강화, 야구장 시설 개선, 야구시장 확대와 수익구조 개선, 아마추어 및 범야구계와의 원활한 소통, 한국야구 국제화 등의 비전을 밝혔다.

구 총재는 “모든 열정을 바쳐 투명한 경영으로 ‘페어 베이스볼(Fair Baseball)’을 구축하는 데 최선을 다할 것”이라고 강조했다.
